There have been some interesting suggestions here - I'm away for a week so cant test any of them yet but will do when I get back. From some of the above, I've not had problems with 1080p bluray, the MPC H264 works fine, but you cant use that within GBPVR for live TV. 1080i TV is my major problem though. CoreAVC just looks awful during sports, but perfectly fine for anything else. I wonder if there's something I could configure there? Or if my CPUs just cant cut it. I'll have to see what the CPU usage is when I'm home... I would love to see if MPC H264 codec worked well though for LiveTV - it's a good idea to play around outside of PVRX2 to see what works and what doesn't. Else it's a new card I guess which will really upset me as the whole point of buying the 780G was for not needing another card for the GBPVR box. That's if there's room in there for another card....

I just uninstalled the 2006 FFDSHOW and installed the 2008 Version 6 beta tryout. It studders horribly on 1080i.

I configured the output the way pBS showed above. I didn't configure anything else other then enabling the MPEG2 with libmpeg2 and a few other codec.

I feel like I always get very bad studder with FFDSHOW. What else do you do to configure it for the 780G?

What if I don't care about H/W accel and only want good picture quality? What would I change?

I had a similar experience with FFDShow, using the Beta 6 and pBS settings. Stutter.

I'll try unregistering the Haupp codecs and see if that makes a difference. I think Sub got it with his earlier comment about using the renderer in mixing mode in GBPVR.

I don't disagree with what Sub said, but it makes me wonder about what Gazoo said because I have been thinking it for awhile. Why put in more H/W and heat? My AMD4850e is sitting there unused, and will generate a lot less heat then another video card.

I can continue to use GBPVR for recordings, what I really need is either a CODEC that GBPVR can used in mixed mode that looks good without the 780G (this would be ideal) -OR- a non-GBPVR nice interface for playing my recordings.

I've played a little with Vista Media Center and it sort of works as an interface to place the GBPVR recordings. For some reason it can only play my HD recordings and not my SD recordings. It also cannot deal with playing pending recordings. It also sometimes seems to be busy doing indexing or something and gets confused. I liked Gazoo's other suggestion of the XBMC. I never heard of that before.

Otherwise I feel like trying Windows 7 Beta Media Center and see if that solves my problems. However, buying a Windows 7 upgrade could be a more expensive (and more labor for me) solution then more hardware.

I've not had any problems with ffdshow tryouts. Used it for mpeg2 and HD (using the Bluray plugin, not live TV). I dont have any codec packs installed - I reinstalled from scratch after a recent vista update broke everything, so only installed the codecs I knew I needed: ffdshow tryouts, CoreAVC, Cyberlink7.3, MPC H264, I went looking for the ATI Mpeg2 codec but cant remember if I installed it... So anyway I know I dont have any odd clashes there. Still, I'll try playing some 1080i content with graphedit and see what happens.

BigMoose,

What do you mean by the bluray plugin? How did you configure MPEG2 in ffdshow? libmeg2 or libavcodec? Did you change anything else or leave it as the defaults?

Whurlston's Movie Library (alpha) plug in plays Bluray disks. I use it for playing them within GBPVR and it works very well. The 1080p playback seems perfect using either the MPC H264 or ffdshow H264 codec. It works with these H264 codecs where as live TV does not.

I'm away from home so not near the PVR box to check re ffdshow and mpeg2 config, but will do when I get home and let you know. I dont think I changed much to do with mpeg2. Actually I stopped using it for mpeg2 and switched to cyberlink7.3 as it played DVDs without any issue and I think I had a problem using ffdshow... not stuttering related though!

im in the same boat as everyone else, 780G motherboard with stuttering playback in GBPVR on interlaced channels but works fine in graphedit.
im using XP SP2 with HVR2200

i think i might be on to something though, as i've managed to recreate the effect in graphedit. editing the properties of video renderer in graphedit and going to the filter config tab, i then changed the x or y 'size' (scaling) to any fraction of 1 and the stuttering starts. change it back to 1 and instant smooth playback.

does anyone know whether GBPVR applies any scaling effect during playback?

This is the main reason i wanted to go with the 780G. I thought putting in a fairly decent duel core would be sufficient to handle playback and i wasnt really going for H/W accel.

I am going to reitterate that i had several headaches with XP and my set up that i was able to solve in Vista, although i wanted to go with XP i just gave up on it. I have a working stable gbpvr cleint that gives me an almost identicle picture to my cable box (I only use it for playback of recordings and mostly HD, i have not tested with Live TV)

I do not have H/W Accel but do not care and i am using FFdshow 05/15/2009
another alternative i have used is Boxee, which is quite good, and also uses FFdshow, but the windows version is somewhat harder to find as it hasnt been released yet

I'm a little confused, how do I set up FFDSHOW not to try to do h/w accel? I get something like 20% CPU. I know folks say that it should be less then 10% for H/W accel, but I do not agree. 20% you are getting partial acceleration. Without accel you should see more like 60%.

I have tried other CODEC such as Cyberlink that has a clear check box not to do accel, but when I uncheck the box, the picture gets even worse....

I'm running VISTA VMR9 Exclusive.
