I've just discovered an interesting problem. There are some FLV files (not all) for which my HTPC will not reproduce sound. This is almost definitely a codec issue, as my laptop plays the same FLVs just fine. The problem is that I have been through ffdshow settings with a fine-toothed comb, and set everything identically on both computers; still, one plays these files perfectly, and the other silently. This is true of both the PVRx2 player and Media Player Classic.

The offending files appear to have certain MP3 tracks, particularly Nellymoser. I've set ffdshow to play Nellymoser using libavdec in both cases.

Can anyone help?

Good tip. Can you help me find out?

Also a good question. When I play in the browser, there is sound on both machines. When I play using any other software (PVRx2, Media Player Classic, etc.), there is sound in one and not in the other.

I think I vaguely remember installing a cyberlink demuxer...thpmg.ax, or some such...I don't know.

you'll need graphedit.exe, search web for one...
set in config.xml: <SaveGraphFiles>true</SaveGraphFiles>
restart recording service and pvrx2.exe..
then play the file in video library, exit....
look in gbvpvr dir for lastgraph.grf open it with graphedit.exe and it'll show all the filters used...

or.......[probably easier]

play the file in video library without any modifications...
look in "PVRX2.exe-native.log" for: "Graph contains the following filters:"
and it will list the default filters for that file...[the file should be last filter]

gbpvr uses default codecs for anything other than mpeg2 or h264 as you can set only those 2 in config for a preference..so same filters are being used in other players...

Thank you again. I'm sorry if you read my earlier response. I was confused, and thought that both logs were identical, but it turns out I was looking at the same log. Don't ask. Here are the facts:

Computer that plays the file:

2009-06-26 23:05:11.500 VERBOSE Graph contains the following filters:
2009-06-26 23:05:11.500 VERBOSE - Video Renderer
2009-06-26 23:05:11.500 VERBOSE - Realtek HD Audio output
2009-06-26 23:05:11.500 VERBOSE - ffdshow Audio Decoder
2009-06-26 23:05:11.500 VERBOSE - ffdshow Video Decoder
2009-06-26 23:05:11.500 VERBOSE - V:\test.flv

Computer that plays the file, but with no audio:

2009-06-26 23:44:04.968 VERBOSE Graph contains the following filters:
2009-06-26 23:44:04.968 VERBOSE - Video Renderer
2009-06-26 23:44:04.968 VERBOSE - ffdshow raw video filter
2009-06-26 23:44:04.968 VERBOSE - FLV Video Decoder
2009-06-26 23:44:04.968 VERBOSE - FLV Splitter
2009-06-26 23:44:04.968 VERBOSE - V:\test.flv

Obviously there are quite a few differences, and I will start trying to align them...but any guidance you can offer would be most welcome. Thanks for your help in determining all this.

FLVSplitter is not installed at all on the "working" computer. However, when I deregister it from the "broken" computer, all my FLV files stop playing entirely; sound, video and all. I tried reregistering the FFDSHOW filter, too; no luck.

I have, however...in a sad sort of way...narrowed the problem down to the FLV splitter. I registered a much newer version from the mpchc people that you recommended. It disabled video on the offending files, as well. I then tried two others that caused them to play back stuck on the frames of the video (no motion) for awhile, then played back with no sound (like the original splitter).

I think I'm a little out of my depth, here.

A quick warning to anyone seeking advice on this. Yesterday, I was unable to play these files, but able to transcode them using FFMPEG. As I noted above, I tried registering a few newer versions of the splitter, and eventually reverted back to my original one. Despite reverting, I now can't transcode these files.

The moral: ALWAYS SET A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT BEFORE MESSING WITH CODECS.
