Calling all NMT users!!

I'm thinking I may loan it out occasionally to my Mom/Inlaws though so being able to load shows on to the internal hard drive easily will be a plus.

Personally I would just put my HDD into an external USB housing & only plug it in when I wanted it.

So far I'm quite satisfied - if anyone is sitting on the fence I'd say just get one!

I agree totally with this statement & you haven't even got GB-PVR running on it yet, just wait until you do, if you are anything like me you will be totally blown away with the improvement in performance when compared with the built in NMT software

I'd agree with that one - copying over the network to the NMT is painfully slow - much better dumping to a locally attached USB drive.

OK, I haven't taken the time to sort out exactly what "containers" and stuff are, but from what I gathered the problem is that avi is NOT a valid container for an x264 encoded file, it should be an mkv.

I took one of the FairUse Wizard x264 encoded file and played with it with several "muxers" last night and didn't make much progress, either the video stuttered are the audio was messed up or you couldn't fast forware/rewind without it hanging. GRRRR!

This afternoon though I played a bit more and I tried mkvmerge GUI from

All I did was load it in and then click save and in not long at all it spit out an mkv file. I gave it a shot on the NMT and it works like a charm! It also works on the HTPCs!

OK, one set of problem encodes down, now on to the Xvids I was having problems with . . .

Yes you did! And it was on the NMT forums you referred me to that I found a thread on making such files work. I had looked for the mkvmerge earlier but for some reason didn't find it, I was in a hurry though. In the thread they gave a link so it was a no brainer.

Again, to anyone wondering if they should pull the trigger on an NMT, the answer is yes -> go for it! They are just the neatest little things!!!

NMTs have replaced the Xboxes with XMBC in my house and the integration of gbprv and the NMT converted me to GBPVR from Myth.

The help here, on this forum, almost in realtime, was a great help in getting the setup up and running.

Reading all this makes me glad I went for the bigger disk rather than trying to compress everything

I thought about that, but they just don't make a disc that's "big enough"!

Personally I think the best solution is not to archive right away, that way you get the maximum value from mvpmcx2 and GBPVR. After 30 days transcode them to h264 and to mkv if you are short of space. Many DVB and HD-PVR users already get h264 compression so converting to mkv doesn't buy a lot.

In my opinion, the reluctance of others to adopt the NMT/Gbpvr installation is very much a function of the availability of up to date instructions on the WIKI. Digging through the numerous posts for the latest info is not a realistic option. When I find those latest automated installer instructions on the forum, they usually work incredibly well. Still, with my box and PCH, there seems to be a ways to go to make the user control from the PCH box be as nice as the control I get from the Huappauge remote to GBPVR directly through the computer box (I will post a question about this elsewhere).

I am one of the most computer savvy people I know, and yet I pale in comparison to many of the people posting here. I am constantly surprised by the lack of computer knowledge of so many of my peers. I often wonder how they are able to set up even the chat programs that they seem to use constantly. So getting them to invest the time to install GBPVR, get it to work, maintain it, and THEN ask them to attempt to connect the PCH to it is out of the question. For some, the whole concept of doing what we are doing would be so beyond their ability to comprehend, that it would be relegated to the land of magic. And then they would say something like, "well why don't you just get another set top box from your cable provider?" And that is an easier solution...for video from your cable provider...
