I have posted a question before on this.

Pictures in portrait mode appear on their side in photo Viewer. I now know that this can be corrected by using up and down keys on remote but.....
Is ther a way to save the new configuration? The pictures turn for viewing but next time appear in the original configuration (back on the side)

I would like to go through them all and orientate them correctly and save that configuration for later.

It'll auto rotate photos which contain EXIF tags if your camera generates them. Otherwise it just show the photo the way it is stored.

Sorry no there isnt. It doesnt change the photo in anyway or store this new rotation info anywhere.

Why don't you try an external application to rotate and save the pictures? Then viewing in GBPVR after that they would show up right.

I discovered after it was too late, that the one I use doesn't reset the flag for orientation when it rotates the picture. So when I view the pictures with other applications, they are the right way. Gbpvr sees that the orientation flag says that the image is rotated to the right and rotates it to the left, but the image had already been rotated to the left once.

I did some searching and found an app that can be used to reset the flag of an image. The source code for the app (jpegexiforient) and an explanation of how the flag works is available here: http://sylvana.net/jpegcrop/exif_orientation.html. The app can be used to read or write the value of the flag in an image file. That site also has a shell script that can be used to automatically go through image files, see if they need to be rotated and rotate them if they do. (The shell script requires that you have jpegtran to rotate the images. I didn't have it & didn't use the shell script.)

That's one way of doing it, but you should be aware that most editing programmes (actually all the ones I've ever tried) lose a fair bit of resolution when you rotate and save - so save as a copy. It probably doesn't make much difference for viewing on a TV, but it might if you later want to do a high res print.

The other way to do it is to use an Exif tag editor which only changes the tag - I use Phil Harvey's excelent ExifTool.

Thanks everybody. ElihuRozen - you described my problem exactly. I turned all my photos manually using windows native program - now exif flags are not correct for GBPVR. (or the native canon program that came with the camera. Ill try Sylvana thanks

That looks neat too - I'll have a play with that - it looks like the orientation flag needs to be present already though. My digi camera is a bit on the old side and doesn't give orientation info... ExifTool allows you to add tags.

Somehow, a few of my images didn't have the tag. It took a little while to figure out how to get ExifTool to add the correct tag.

Yep - I had the same problem when I first found it, but once you get used to it, it's pretty powerful...
