Pictures not displaying in portrait mode

I seem to have photo library plugin which works fine but some of the pictures are in portrait format (up and down rather than sideways) and the program shows then on their sides. Screensaver does the same so i am guessing it is in the parent GBPVR system somewhere. I have tried turning them with various programs (Windows picture and fax viewer and photoshop) and they display fine in those programs but still sideways in photo viewer or the screensaver.
Is there a setting or a way to fix this. Should i use Photos plugin or picture library instead?

I suspect my problem is (as usual) that i dont know how it works. Any suggerestions gratefully accepted.

The "picture library" (ie, built in photo viewer) uses EXIF "Orientation" information if its available in your photos. Not all cameras create this info though. Mine does, and it correctly orients the photos.

You can also also press the up/down keys to manually rotate the picture.
