Is there a way to record just part of a show?

As I was watching the Jay Leno show last night (live) I got to thinking it might be nice to just record the first ten minutes each night (the monologue), then splice them together to make a one hour "monologue show".

This could also be usefull to record just the last nn minutes of a show, like Dancing With the Stars, where you're only interested in viewing the final results, and not the whole program.

Is there anyway to do this? I did some searching here in the forums and in the wiki but couldn't come up with a solution. I know the pending recordings are in the database and I presume the start/stop times are from the EPG, but that's the extent of my knowledge.

I know I could record the whole show, then cut the first 10 minutes to a new file and later combine them all in a batch command, but a neater method would just be to modify the start/stop time before the recording started.

Does Manual from the Recordings side menu do what you want?

Not sure. The idea would be to set it up as a "Record Season" recording, so I could get a week or two's worth of 10 minute clips to combine without having to do a manual record every evening.

It would be ideal if there was a hook in GBPVR right at the time a recording was about to start that would allow a plugin to set the length of the recording (and optionally the starting time for when you wanted to record just the last nn minutes of a show).

The manual record option has the choice of daily, weekly or Monday to Friday. If you go to 'recording type' you can use the right arrow to change options.
That should work for you.

I suspect it would be possible with SED. You could even rename the ten minute show to "Monologue", then add recurring recordings for your newly defined show.

Never tried (and I'm not sure, if the "stock" plugins do this also), but I know that TV Listings' screen for recording shows, allows you to enter negative numbers in the padding section. If that is not a bug/flaw, it would in theory allow you to edit out the rest of the show. Although that could be a major PITA if the show is a long one.

If I modify the xmltv.xml file and immediately after the "jay leno" 1 hour programme create another programme containing the same data with the exception of a modified start/stop time and title, will the EPG update accept this? i.e. does GBPVR care if there are two programme entries for the same channel in the same time slot assuming the show titles are different?

No, GB-PVR won't care. It wouldn't be the same time slot... Keep the times straight... 1200 to 1210 and the second 1210 to 0100 It sounds like you're planning to do this

He might be planning to intentionally overlap the slots. I think this is actually OK with GBPVR, as I've seen it by accident before. It makes it harder to select the right program entry in the Guide screen, but if you are searching, or recording by name in a recurring entry, it would probably work.

GBPVR can definitely handle overlapping programs in the same time period on the same channel.

I have had this (unwanted) condition for quite a while now. Usually one program shows up as for time of 10:00-11:00 and the second shows for 10:01-11:00.

I have noticed that one of the program entries shows (after being processed by UltraXMLTVEnhancer) to have episodes listed in a "204" type format while the other one shows the episode in a "S02E04" type format.

It's been a real pain to live with for me. One man's problem seems to be another's solution.

It sounds like you could just make a copy of the program info for the Tonight Show in the XML file and move the END time up.
