Is good TV tuner card important if connecting STB via s-video?

If I connect my STB to a TV tuner via s-video, that means the STB is doing the tuning, right? So, do I even need a TV tuner card? What is the cheapest thing I could get that works with GBPVR if I'm using the STB to do the tuning?

Yes, that means the STB is doing the tuning. Problem is, I don't think there are any s-video input cards that would be more cost effective than a good old Hauppauge PVR-150. You can get used 150 cards pretty cheap and they're supported by GB-PVR. It would be your best bet.

The only analog capture device that I know of that had a hardware MPEG encoder (required by GBPVR) that DID NOT have a tuner was the Adaptec Videoh PCI card. I don't know how many years ago Adaptec stopped manufacturing them. The most widely supported line of analog capture cards would probably be Hauppauge (PVR-150 being the most basic pci version that will work with GBPVR, mentioned in a previous post).
