I am thinking of upgrading my gbpvr pc to Windows 7 next week. I will probably just do the upgrade and not the clean install(so as not to have to reinstall all of my software packages). I have the latest version of gbpvr loaded on my machine. I was wondering if anybody who has tried out the new operating system could share with me what problems they had or any suggestions relating to gbpvr. Thanks for any help!

Personally, I've not done anything really different from XP/Vista on my 2 W7 x64 installs. I've not had great luck with my HVR1600 in any OS but my 2250 and HDHR are a perfect fit for GBPVR and W7.
I am not a huge fan of upgrading OS's but I guess, if you run into problems, you can do the full install.
My opinions of W7 (I beta tested) after long use is that it is very, very well suited for media work. I'm running fast and have run into very few problems in everything I've tried be it media or any software.

I could almost never use the ATSC tuner on my HVR1600 until I started using WatchHDTV to control it. GB-PVR worked fine for the analog tuner/encoder but failed almost always on the digital side. I record the whole stream and use a software player to select the sub-channel. (or edit it out with VideoReDo before watching)

I played with ATSC for a bit and did have some luck and WatchHDTV is a neat little program that I wish would continue development. I dabbled with it before the US digital transition when some of my local stations were at a lower power and I had a few channels that were not clear.

I am running Win 7 x86 (32bit) Release Candidate, build 7100.

My signature shows the hardware configuration. My HVR-1600 works perfectly, tuning analog cable, and either QAM or ATSC signals, depending on that coax I connect to the digital antenna port.

The card runs about the same using either GBPVR or Win 7 Media Center. Although I think it was a bit smoother to set it up in Media Center. But that was probably because I had not installed a digital tuner in GBPVR before I moved to Win 7. There was a slight learning curve with GBPVR, but the forums GBPVR Wiki and Forums were a big help. Smile

Also, I had to install the latest Win 7 drivers for the HVR-1600 from the Hauppauge web site. The CD-ROM drivers and apps that came with the HVR-1600, about two years old I think, were pretty worthless for Win 7.

As soon as I receive my final release Win 7 x86 (32bit) DVD from Amazon, hopefully within a week or so, I plan to do a clean install and blow away the old Win 7 RC files.

In fact, my recommendation to anyone moving to Win 7 is to do a clean install, or at least create a dual boot-system, and forget the upgrade route. That way, if you run into problems, you can still run the old system for a while as you troubleshoot. I've rarely seen a Windows "upgrade" workout well in the past, and unless you're coming from Vista, and staying with the same exact version and "bit size" in Win 7, my guess is that it won't be a very clean process this time around either.

Also, if you are moving up from 32-bit XP/Vista to 64-bit Win 7, you'll likely run into a lot more hardware driver problems than I encountered. In fact, I deliberately stuck with moving to Win 7 32-bit, for now, to ease my "transition pain". Smile

Yes, the 1600 works fine for me in Media Center but not in GBPVR. It's been hit or miss. Sorry I wasn't very clear in my earlier post.

I have run GBPVR under Windows 7 RC1

I had many problems with Video freezing that requiered a hard boot and others unfoze themselves after a little prompting.
I don't know whether this was directly related to GBPVR as you can not always get Win 7 drivers, chipset etc and so use Vista drivers.

Recomendation; Wait for a while because Windows 7 is still just a little buggy and lots of drivers still missing. Windows 7 will put generic drivers when others not available but they don't always work. IMO not worth the hassle just yet.

Recently took the plunge to test win 7 on my client machine.

I took a vista build and upgraded to win 7 (both 32 bit) I chose the upgrade route to see what that was like, well it looked like it went smoothly but when testing GBPVR i encountered BSODs when trying to play video (it would play for like 10 seconds then crash computer) It also took almost twice as long to upgrade than the clean install

Went to a clean install and no more crashing but dont also havent ironed out all the problems yet with GBPVR and my win 7 install. I have a feeling this has more to do with the ATI drivers than win 7 at the moment but its hard to tell. So i am deciding to wait on taking the plunge completely untill i can test it out and make sure all is work properly

Thanks for all the suggestions and tips. It looks like I should do the clean install instead of the upgrade. I was hoping that just going from Vista Home Premium to the Windows 7 Home Premium I wouldn't have too. I guess I better get all my applications install CD's organized. Thanks again for all your help.
