Hi Steeb,

I am aware that Sub is the master architect of this system and that he prefers to cut code and not write documentation. Wink I don't know the program well enough to decide my feelings about it. The fact that N-PVR is so new and not yet complete means that any decisions about feelings should be deferred until more of the program is complete.

I don't know how, when or why the GB-PVR wiki was created but I am hoping that those kind souls continue their efforts for N-PVR. I haven't spent much time in the GB-PVR wiki because I don't know what will or won't apply to N-PVR.

My usage of N-PVR at this time is limited to what options or controls I can see in the UI. I don't know any of the magic keystrokes or special settings that can be obtained by directly editing the configuration files. I have no detailed idea about the apparently wide range of additional files that can be added to the program and data directories that modify or enhance the operation of N-PVR. It is this basic information, tailored to the N-PVR program, that I believe will be most helpful to the newbies like me.

As for contributing to a wiki, I am too new to this to make any useful content creation contribution. I also don't think my written language skills are suitable for easy to follow documentation. I have been known to help proof read documents and manuals when time permits.

Regards,
Ian.

Hi Ian,

many thanks for such a well articulated response!

You would be actually making content creation by your comments. I think I'm right in saying using N'ew'PVR is 'new' to all of us! There are some very seasoned GB-PVR users here who seem to have made the switch fairly smoothly, and then there's me who's been very grumpy about the whole thing.

I think whoever gets the ball rolling on a new wiki (unless it is being done under wraps, which I don't think it is) will have a mountain to climb but feedback like yours can help to shape its virgin birth and its future!

Hi Steeb,

To get the creative juices flowing for the more knowledgeable among us...

The sorts of things I would like to see in a wiki are sections with headings and appropriate content for things like (in no particular order) "UI Commands", "Command Line Options", "Keyboard Shortcuts", "Configuration Files", "Optional Files", "Available Skins", "Making New Skins", "Compatible Hardware", "Tuner Setup", "EPG Setup", "Recording TV", "Suggested Tools For Editing Recordings" etc.

Regards,
Ian.

Most of those are quite specific, I'd suggest starting with higher level sections.

For example (brain dump alert): Getting Started (covers software requirements and the install process), Configuration, Manual (actually using NPVR), Walkthroughs (eg setting up tuners for different countires), Advanced Configuration (for anything not in the settings dialog - config.xml and batch file tweaks etc), Plugins, Skins, FAQ (very important), and a section on hardware (remotes, TV tuners etc).

"Suggested Tools For Editing Recordings" is an odd one. My opinion is that it has no place in a GBPVR/NPVR wiki - there are plenty of other websites that cover messing with video files.

Hi McBainUK,

This came from reading about the ad skipping plugins and software that seem to be associated with GB-PVR. Apparently those modules can work with N-PVR. Also with some TV now broadcast as H.264 some users may have difficulties in finding editing software for these files. This section of the wiki could document these and any other tools that people can use on their recordings.

Any way, all of this is food to inspire those in the know to start brain dumping into documents that can kick start a N-PVR wiki.

Regards,
Ian.

To be honest, my setup is still on GB-PVR since it is rock solid for me with only recording analog from STB. I plan on making the switch before the new fall season, but my workload in my real life is keeping me from having the time to do much of anything.

@ you Fatman_do Big Grin

I'm currently sticking with my 'almost near' perfect GB-PVR set up. But suspecting I will become an NPVR user am 'backing up' my options!

thanks for also bringing me back to what this thread was chatting about! Which was me altering the current wiki homepage for now to give some indication of its status.

I gave it the 48 hours so am now going to implement what I've done, any other wiki contributors please change/amend as necessary!

cheers

Dear all,

well I did that bit after my self set 48 hour deadline:

http://gbpvr.com/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HomePage

for me my interference on the wiki homepage is now closed until further developments!

Cheers

Steeb
