what driver version and what os? most drivers for that card don't enable multi-use of both sides at once in win7/vista..
it may be that un-setup digital side is keeping card busy and not letting encoder go..
what is the devie-id from device mananger for that card? can tell from driver which one it is and if it has hardware encoder for sure..

no, I don't think that can be it. sub has made it clear that his software (both gb-pvr and npvr) builds a graph when it needs a tuner, and then releases it when finished. So even if the card were setup, which it isn't, nothing at all would be talking to the digital side of the card. it does nothing to even initialise the card ahead of time.

filtercheck should be modified to show the 'KSCATEGORY_MULTIPLEXER' category to show other devices that have their encoder in that section..

Yes, I think you're right there. It's clear from the gb-pvr direct.ini file that ATI 550's & 650's used to have a filter and output thus: "ATI AVStream Analog Capture". Now, presumably due to a driver change, that output is gone (in fact several outputs that used to be there are gone now), and the output is in the mux section as you say.

I think all that is needed to make it work in NPVR is an "AnalogDevices.XML" entry like this:

Code:
<Device filter="ATI AVStream Analog Capture">
      <Name>ATI 650 Pro</Name>
      <Type>HARD_ENCODE</Type>
      <FilterEncoder>ATI AVStream Analog Capture</FilterEncoder>
  </Device>

EXCEPT THAT WON'T WORK... that's the old filter name and output... we need the new filter name and ouput.

Someone with one of these cards could perhaps use GraphStudio or GraphEdit to find the correct filter name and output?

It might still need a patch from sub too though, I'm not sure.

My ATI-550 Pro has exactly the same entry in AnalogDecives.xml and it works excellent with the latest driver from ASUS/ATI.

Thanks for all of the info. I will try and edit the AnalogDevices.xml file when I get home. If all else fails, I will try the software encoding and see if that works.

they both should still have that filter, it's listed in driver for all the different boards....so that should do the trick if it's not already in there..
your logs show it listed too..

I'll be real curious if just adding that entry will work. I don't think it will, but I'm always happy to be wrong in a good way. Being wrong sometimes adds to my knowledge more than being right.

Update: Using a software encoder works, but the quality that I am getting is mediocre.

I used GraphEdit to look at my filters and I have a filter called ATI AVStream MPEG2 Multiplexer, but it is listed under WDM Streaming Multiplexer Devices not WDM Streaming Encoder Devices. I checked the direct.cfg file in GBPVR and found the following for the ATI Theater 650:

[ATI Theater 650 Pro]
INIT_MODE=DEFAULT
INIT_MSP=0
LIVE_PREVIEW_MODE=2
SUPPORTS_FM_RADIO=1
BLACKBIRD=1
CONEXANT=1
FILTER_CROSSBAR=ATI AVStream Analog Xbar
FILTER_CAPTURE=ATI AVStream Analog Capture
FILTER_TV_TUNER=ATI AVStream Analog Tuner
FILTER_TV_AUDIO=ATI AVStream Analog TV Audio
FILTER_ENCODER=ATI AVStream MPEG2 Multiplexer
PIN_CROSSBAR_VIDEO_TUNER_IN=Video Tuner In
PIN_CROSSBAR_AUDIO_TUNER_IN=Audio Tuner In
PIN_CROSSBAR_VIDEO_DECODER_OUT=Video Decoder Out
PIN_CROSSBAR_AUDIO_DECODER_OUT=Audio Decoder Out
PIN_TVTUNER_ANALOG_VIDEO_OUT=Analog Video
PIN_TVTUNER_ANALOG_AUDIO_OUT=Analog Audio
PIN_TVAUDIO_TV_AUDIO_IN=TVAudio In
PIN_TVAUDIO_TV_AUDIO_OUT=TVAudio Out
PIN_CAPTURE_ANALOG_VIDEO_IN=ATI Analog Video Input
PIN_CAPTURE_ANALOG_AUDIO_IN=ATI Analog Audio Input
PIN_CAPTURE_PREVIEW_AUDIO_OUT=ATI Audio Capture Output
PIN_CAPTURE_I2S_OUT=ATI Video Decoder YUV Output
PIN_CAPTURE_656_OUT=ATI Audio Decoder PCM Output
PIN_ENCODER_I2S_IN=ATI MUX Video YUV Input
PIN_ENCODER_656_IN=ATI MUX Audio PCM Input
PIN_ENCODER_OUT=ATI MUX MPEG2 Output
PIN_WRITER_INPUT_IN=Input

I am wondering also if sub could make a patch based on this information.

Thanks

I guess you could try this in your AnalogDevices.xml:

Code:
<Device filter="ATI AVStream MPEG2 Multiplexer">
      <Name>ATI 650 Pro</Name>
      <Type>HARD_ENCODE</Type>
      <FilterEncoder>ATI AVStream MPEG2 Multiplexer</FilterEncoder>
  </Device>

I have a feeling though that the Device Filter name is probably wrong. I wish FilterCheck could display the correct info.

Its not to do with this. NPVR already looks in both 'WDM Streaming Multiplexer Devices' and 'WDM Streaming Encoder Devices'
