...it have nothing to do with DirectX Smile

It is working only for old MPEG-2 DXVA but not h.264.

Here is some more info about this.

Simply DXVA2 need DX9, not DX10. You can't run on XP since it requires a different driver architecture.

There is a russian edition of DirectX-10 that works on XP, no matter wath Hoborg says, unfortunately I don't have the address any more, but you can google for it.

Heres a test that illustrates the npvr\ac3 audio problem on XP.

1. Download the attached, zipped 22 sec. 1280x720 video files. (Contains 1 .mpg, 1 .ts and 1 .m2ts of the same video & audio)

2. Go to Control Panel\Sound and Audio Devices\Speaker Settings Advanced and select 5.1 surround speakers. (you can do this even if you only have stereo speakers)

3. Install either AC3filter or FFdshow tryout.

4. Start npvr, right click for setting\decoders and set the AC3Audio to either AC3filter or ffdshow as your preferred decoder in npvr. Next click on the ... box next to the decoder and configure AC3Filter Output Format to: AS IS or disable the Mixer Option checkbox in ffdshow.

5. Now play the 3 videos to make sure you get some audio. (if you have stereo speakers, you'll only hear some plates clacking and some footsteps)

6. Exit npvr and Go to Control Panel\Sound and Audio Devices\Advanced and check the Mute for the center speaker.

7. GO back to npvr and play the 3 videos again. You should not hear any dialog during any of the video but when I play the .ts format video
I get dialog from my left and right speakers.

I've found that if I do this test with another directshow based player like Media player Classic or Windows Media Player, you don't hear any dialog with the .ts file.

Just wondering if anyone else experience this same condition. Thanks. (sorry about the crummy web hosting)

Just small note - you should not use EVR on XP (use VMR9), this will broke DXVA (you cannot combine DXVA2 renderer with DXVA1 api from XP).

BTW, did you tryed SAF5 (link below)? Can you post small video sample to test?

When I was still having problems, SAF was one of the decoders I tried installing...I still had the problem. I did not try it again after installing the updated version of nPVR, but I would suspect it would work, but I was content enough once I found ffdshow working (the old "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach).

I tried playing the .ts clip both with ffdshow and AC3 filter as the AC3 decoder from within nPVR. In both cases, it played fine with 5.1 output (dialog through center speaker).

It must be just my setup then... Thanks for the input.

My best suggestion would be to try to un-install (or at least unregister) all your codecs, then reinstall/register just the couple that you need...see if that helps. In the past most of my issues like this one have been the result of a conflict (nVidia is terrible that way, but others can be involved as well). Good luck...I feel your pain!

OK so I took your advice and uninstall most of my codecs. Then I reinstalled ac3filter and re-registered my cyberlink video decoder. This is what I came up with...

The test sample I'm using (test.zip file from posting on 08-26-10) is a 22 second video clip with 5.1 channel sound. The dialog in ONLY in the center channel. You should never get any dialog spilling over into the left and right channels. If you mute the center channel, you should hear almost nothing.

I played the above mpeg sample in gbpvr to get the lastgraph. I started graphedit and opened the graph and everything plays fine. I get dialog in the center channel only (no dialog washes over into the left and right speakers) 1st graph attached.

I built a new graph using the same sample in a .ts container using the npvr ts source file filter and the npvr ts mon filter. When I play the file in graphedit, I have the same problem as in npvr. I get the center dialog out of all 3 speakers, center, left and right and the center level is much to low.

But, if I change the clock in graphedit to the default directsound device (yellow clock light up), the file plays correctly... Dialog in the Center channel ONLY.

So, I was wondering what the clock does and if their is anyway to have it set to the default directsound device when playback .ts files.

(I hope that was clear??)

Very interesting, I have the same problem with a few recordings (dialog spread over front and read channels). Sub?
