can anyone give me some guidance about using an external usb hard drive to record tv shows directly to? I have been using an internal drive and now it is starting to get constant disk errors and I think it is kicking the bucket. I dont want there to be lag issue due to being usb instead of sata or ide. Also can anyone recommend a 500gb or 1tb drive less than $50? thanks for any tips!

usb is always gonna be a problem with throughput..it only transfers at around 24-28MBps whereas a esata or sata will transfer significantly faster...[double or better]
but you can get a esata drive for external use...same speed as internal..
personally i get the raw drive by itself and add a enclosure of my liking...i know where you can get esata enclosures for around 20$...
a 1000g drive is gonna be hard to find for *under* 50...much less with an enclosure...
i did get a 1 tb iomega external usb for 68$ the other day....but that was a Fry's sale..

usb is only good for secondary storage [archival]...it'll bog down for recording if doing more than 1 stream at once..or trying to play one while recording another...

Just got an email from Newegg that reminded me of this post. Here's a 500 GB internal drive for $40 shipped. http://promotions.newegg.com/NEemail/sep...-E0B-_-HDD

If you scroll down just a bit there's a 1TB for $60 shipped. Smile
