Have requested this before, it would really help with analog recordings (from a STB) that always default to 4:3 format despite almost all programmes now being in widescreen. Others have also suggested a default aspect for each tuner card.

Attached is NPVR log file of .mpg file playback. Intial aspect ratio set to 4:3. Actual content is 16x9. After cycling through with F7 back to either auto or fill, display is correct.
That does sound the easiest to be implemented and would solve the issue. I do though like your original idea of aspect ratio overides by filetype. My particular situation (which I am sure others share) is that I have both an analog and digital tuner card (and the WAF takes a hit when she starts an analog recording and sees people all squashed up! She can press F7 a few times but this is more than had to be done in GB-PVR as there was a workaround (=bug) that allowed 'fill' to default).
The digital card records .dvr-ms (can also be .ts) files and I would like it to keep auto aspect ratios as it sets the bit in the file correctly (as it just copies to stream).
The analog card records .mpg files (from STB) with the 4:3 bit always set so would like to overide this with 'fill'.

I can do with either option. My problem is I have an older MS mediacenter remote that doesn't have any assignable buttons so I have to go to the pc keyboard to change the aspect ratio (sorry lazy...). Seems like the old GBPVR "remembered" your aspect ratio settings.
@Northpole
I wouldn't call that lazy, I'm hoping to get mine to a point where I never need a keyboard for normal operation. I want it to be a DVR, not a desktop computer.
This was actually one of the next issues I was going to look into. I was assuming we had the options to fiddle with the aspect ratios like we did in GBPVR, but if we don't, I sure hope we do in the future, maybe even more options than before.

Resurrecting a 3-month old thread but is there any workaround or feature in NPVR yet that can help with this. I.E. to be able to force NPVR to playback with a "fill" aspect ratio as default.
I (and I guess many others) still use analog cards (e.g. PVR150) to record from STBs (e.g. over s-video) and these always play as 4:3 files (even though over 95% of programmes are 16:9). So currently F7 has to be pressed on every playback to correct the AR (=low WAF).
It might be possible to post-process the file (alter AR bit) but this does not help with live TV.
This is the only gripe I have left before moving to NPVR (as GBPVR had a bug that allowed a workaround for this issue). Anybody any bright ideas? Thanks

Great resurrection of thread! I too have PVR150 and it is annoying to have to manually change AR. I watch with interest
I'd vote for just having it work the same as GBPVR, where it just starts every video using whatever the last selected ratio was, be it auto, fill, or whatever.

+1, at least for now. This would solve most scenarios.
