Now PVRX2 is asking for admin elevation

I'm not sure what NPVR did... I';m pretty sure it's not much... I have both of the services off, reboot, and then start the GB_PVR Recording service... still no dice... I'm not sure how NPVR changed GB-PVR... from what I read... it keeps to itself quite nicely...
I really cant see installing NPVR would have caused this. There is nothing in common between the two apps. They share no files, no registry settings, no directories etc. NPVR doesnt change any system settings. There have also been zero reports of this from other users.

I checked that... for me and all users... and I removed the manifest files

UAC makes some odd compromises, but has saved enough machines that I deal with (for regular users) to be more than worth while.
For GB-PVR, I simply set the "c:\program files\...\gbpvr" folder security settings to allow full access for everyone.
And if every new program install is causing a host of UAC problems, you are using really crappy software. Use stuff that is better written.

I really wanted to be sure default UAC was alwasy running, especially as I was developing UltraXMLTV... and needed to jump thorugh a few hoops to make it work with 64 bit and with UAC...

I completely forgot about the option to allow full access to the gbpvr folder... it's still a workaround... but at least it's not full access to the C drive :-)

and the winner is....

It looks like it was the virtual store thing again... when I thought I should hunt for that point, that I vaguely remembered, I had a hard time finding the path on the forum or wiki... I think it was mostly for other things... Maybe it's something for the FAQ...

I don't even know why the virtual store is necessary...

Thanks all for opinions and thoughts...

My own is: I agree with all the negative stuff about UAC, except for one thing which I feel supercedes those ideas...

It's Windows... way too many people out there, using defaults... and I need to know how UAC will respond just as other users will see it... for developing, I need to learn to deal with it... for troubleshooting, I need to know how Microsoft wants it to be troubleshot, (even if it really sucks sometimes)

And then there's going for a coffee and wifi at a open hotspot... better to leave some security in place...

I really hated having to click those damn boxes... but it's not all that bad on a faster computer when the screen goes dark and the popup happens quickly... if it was really sluggish... I'd kill UAC in a heartbeat

From my point of view, the only good thing about UAC is that you can turn it off Big Grin

i second that...Big Grin

there's also the option to turn it on for everyone but admins...
then you could use 'runas' to run some programs with uac on, some with it off [runas admin], with just a shortcut...Smile

It is a compatibility shim

Since NPVR plays by the proper security rules, I'm assuming it won't be a problem going forward

Yeah, you shouldnt ever have virtual store problems with NPVR. It is designed for Win7. The old GBPVR app wasnt, and would have these issues for a lot of users.

I probably over emphasis the importance of UAC but this morning I saw my first benefit in 3 years. I was downloading new Froyo firmware for my Android tablet and the download site required java script so I had to trust it to bypass NoScript. A long time after the download I got dim screen and flashing toolbar saying x wants to install ... so I said no. Thinking about how this can happen since I have my anti-virus and firefox auto-updating I noted Firefox was "stuck" on upgrading to 3.6.10 so me bad too for trusting automation. It may simply have been chinese fonts or something like that but I am glad I had UAC on.

Regarding UAC don't forget about it in NPVR when applying patches.

I run UAC in my HTPC and have no issues with it, with one major exception. Eventghost that uses the Microsoft MCE remote plugin must be run as admin, since the M$ dll would not work otherwise... So I end up having to manually start Eventghost in admin mode after every reboot.

So in this case it is Microsoft themselves that have created the issue. Eventghost runs fine with other plugins, and can be auto started with them.

Any workarounds would be appreciated...
