I have just done a fresh install on a brand new computer (win 7 Pro), and decided to test with NPVR. I have previously used GBPVR for many years, on an XP-system, and been very happy with it.

The problem is that I cannot get things working the way I want them to.....

Normally I would use the PC to schedule the recordings, the files end up on a fileserver, and I then watch them from different Xbox'es around the house. So - I never watch shows on the PC - i simply just schedule the recordings.

So my basic scenario:
  • Launch NPVR (NextPVR.exe)
  • Schedule a recording
  • Exit NPVR

Normally I would assume that the recording service running in the background would pick up the thread, and record the scheduled show, but that does not happen. As soon as I close NPVR the recording stops.

I also noticed that there is no icon present in the activity bar, after I close NPVR (reference: GBPVR changed color from white to green when active).

For testing purpose I tried to manually start NPVRServiceControl.exe and got the following:

Quote:The module "NPVRCCDump.ax" was loaded but the call to DllRegisterServer failed with error code
0x80070005

I thought this was an indiciation that something did not install correctly, so I tried re-installing, but it does not help.

Any ideas on what could be wrong?

Attached are logs captured during replay of the above.

Do you have UAC enabled? If so, did you run the installation as Administrator?

In your logs you have "Using local in-process recording service" this is one of the little annoyances for me, since if the Recording Service is not running NextPVR starts its own temporary one. You probably should send the rest of your logs to see why the NPVR Recording service isn't starting (maybe a firewall?)

... or it isn't installed because he didn't have the nessesary privileges to install a system service.

I've had this irritation too... thinking everything was fine and then finding out later that NPVR was running it's own recording service (and of course the discovery always comes at the most inopportune time). Perhaps sub could be persuaded to have a checkbox in settings that says something like "Require NPVR Recording Service, Return Error if not Running"; perhaps just a different interpretation of the existing "Use background recording service" checkbox, which last I read from sub doesn't do anything.

NPVRSetup will escalate the privilege just fine.

Not sure what logs to upload - as there is nothing more available? I get the NPVR.log, but the other log files in the directory are dated 2010-08-19, and that would mean they are older than the computer.

However - I retested to start the service from the shortcut ("Start NPVR Service") and now got the attached error message (the one I originally indicated was from when I tried to re-Register filters - sorry).

So - I must have messed up during installation, but do not understand what I could have done differently? I am an Administrator on the machine.

Could it be that the uninstallation messed something up?

I' suggest right-click on the installation procedure and choose "Run as Administrator", Or turn UAC off.

I have tested the following:
  • Uninstallation followed by re-installation through the use of "explicit" administration privelegies (contextual menu on .exe/"Run as administrator")
  • No success, exactly same behaviour as when I just installed (as admin)
  • Uninstallation followed by re-installation with UAC disabled
  • Seemingly a bit more succesful - the recording service is visible as a running service after running my scenario (indicated in first post), but the recording stops once I quit the application

Any other ideas?

From the symptoms you describe, it sounds like you've got some firewall or antivirus software that is stopping communication between NextPVR.exe and NRecord.exe, causing NextPVR.exe to think NRecord.exe isnt running and it to start it's only local recording engine instead.
