as a result of trying to clear up the DirectX issue I rolled back to a cleaner installation on my server (pre NPVR) and reinstalled NPVR (1.3.6). Whatever was causing the FireDTV device to not work is no longer a problem, works fine again.
HOWEVER I have discovered solving DirectX installation issues is a major headache And am unable to resolve this error. Just to be sure if I remain running NPVR in this current state (falling back to software rendering of UI) will that affect anything else......... or do I need to really resolve DirectX issue first?
cheers muchly

NPVR and devices all seem fine, DirectX issue not solvable without a major investigation in which case may as well rebuild server with Windows7, so guess for now can I work with this? (server not really used for anything except back-end to thin clients, does it matter if UI is software rendered or are there wider implications?)

So the original problem is gone, but just the remaining DirectX problem? Unfortunately I wouldnt know what to suggest on that one. I'm not a DirectX expert, and that installer (linked earlier) has always worked fine in the past.
You can leave it software rendering if you like. It's just a bit less optimal when using NextPVR.exe UI on that machine.

Yup original issue resolved with new install. Don't know if anyone out there is a DirectX guru but trying to troubleshoot the problem has been a very elusive task! The fact that DirectX is bound to Windows pretty much makes it nigh on impossible to remove it and re-install it. I did find a way to roll it back to DirectX 8 and then run 9 again but that did not resolve issue, could be something with my hardware it doesn't like but with DXDiag giving no errors at all seems impossible to trace error!
Thanks Sub, I can live with Software rendering for now until server rebuild time
