multiple drive storage

was wondering if it's possible to have gbpvr record to multiple drives if necessary. what i mean is, if your 1st drive is full, the program will begin writing to your next selected drive and so on.

You could use a raid-controller (Raid 0 means: striping the data over several disks). This increases the speed of the "resulting" drive, too.

I'm quite happy with the storage on the drive that I store TV on, but if I go on holiday for a week I have to move stuff around before I leave so there's enough room (I usually watch a lot, but then delete it as soon as I've watched it so there are never that many files there). It would save soo much time if GBPVR could just go, hmm out of room here, record here instead then and that way I wouldn't have to move anything around.

exactly what i had in mind. i think that it would be feasible to look at the quality chosen for a program and compare the expected size (maybe at constant bitrate) to the amount of freespace so the show wouldn't even have to be split to 2 files. or let the user decide what is an acceptable amount of freespace available on the drive before gbpvr should switch to the backup drive.

as for the raid suggestion, it isn't a terrible idea but would much prefer not to use raid 0 for anything I want to save. i just don't think the added bandwidth is necessary for this set up. thanks for the suggestion but just looking for something built into the application.

If you use Windows Xp Pro, you could do as I do, turn your show storage drive into a dynamic volume. Then as it fills up, add another drive to the volume. The drive letter never changes.

I used to have (besides my O/S boot drive) 2 150GB drives. It was a pain to always be shuffling stuff around to make recording space. Doing the above makes much more efficient use of your HD space and makes it trivial to add more space. My free space was just 27GB yesterday (out of 300GB) so today I went to TigerDirect's local store and got a Seagate they have on special for $140.00 (250GB) and added it to the volume. Now I have 280 MB free and I preserved my recordings.

This method works very nicely if you are out of IDE slots, simply get a cheap PCI IDE adapter and add more drives. I did have to change my power supply from a 400W to a 650 W heavy duty P/S, as now I have four hard drives and 2 DVD/CD drives as well as all the other PVR paraphernalia and I was a bit concerned about the pretty hot air being blown out of the P/S fan.

Disadvantage is that if one drive fails, the complete volume is gone and it has to be rebuilt from scratch.

But, who cares, it's only TV, right?
