mvallevand Wrote:I think bumping the appropriate thread is more productive. This seems more like a way of accumulating concerns about known and perceived issues to justify GB-PVR. What is the "XP issue" for users not using the HDHR in combination with another tuner?

As examples, given the work sub and I put into getting the MVP to work in an equivalent manner and then reading comments about the MVP as one reason for staying is frustrating. Similarly, when I read this and think of the upgrade from ML3 I say why bother user are putting too many conditions to make it worth the effort.

When I wrote the "xp issues" I had a couple things in mind that I can't seem to either remember or find again in the forums... And I don't want to just leave this hanging out there like I am just knocking on sub's work. So please disregard that portion. I really love gbpvr as I have it working. And I look forward to using npvr just a bit gun shy since things work so well as is.

Hi

It looks like the latest version has cured this, since upgrading earlier today not a single stutter, even on the HD channels (WHS server with PCH client)

cheers

I haven't swtiched because

(a) **UPDATE this was fixed by Direct X June 2010 redistributable update**
The menus on npvr scroll much slower for some reason on my HTPC. Frustratingly, a test npvr install on my laptop scrolls fast. I'm totally confused as to what could be going on there.

(b) The menu font size seems huge on a 1024 by 768 wide screen. Channel names get badly truncated etc. Havent yet looked into if thats an easy fix.

© Stuttering on audio on live tv. If I quicky pause/play it goes away. (running 2.03)

(d) **UPDATE this was fixed by Direct X June 2010 redistributable update**
Channel changes seem slower. Not sure if thats to do with the new always on timeshift mode.

(e) Realted to manditory time shift, I feel npvr needs a dedicated 'sacrificial' harddrive for timeshifting work so that boot/recording/dvd etc drives can spin down. Don't like having a drive with valuable content running all the time. I guess I just feel safer , for example, with my dvd drive only spinning up when needed. This is just a personal preference, please dont beat me over the head with drive MTBF stats. I guess this is where a ram drive would be great.

(f) when I hit the 'i' button on my mce remote I get jammed with a flicking menu. Not sure what's happening there.

What I like about npvr

(a) config settings are just a right click away.

(b) easily copying tuner settings

© video rendering seems to be much cleaner/better Smile

Please note, this is not me tearing into npvr. I've worked as an embedded developer and I know the amazing amount of work that sub must put into npvr and I'm very very appreciative.

Could (a) be the wrong version of DirectX installed - I see sub mention this quite a bit where everything else runs fine, but menus consume much CPU time with the wrong version????

Re: (d) and (e): Channel changing on all my systems is much faster on npvr than it was on gbpvr. Your harddrive may live a lot longer if it doesn't have to spin up and down all the time, starting and stopping is a hard load on the machanics in a HD. And npvr is not in timeshift until you press Pause, it just buffers the show allowing you to skip back whenever you watch live-tv.

NPVR /GBPVR) do a lot of logging so the UserData/ProgramFiles folder so your drive will likely never spin down while you are watching LiveTV. Because of your rather unique requirements that would seem like they are a good place to configure the LiveTV buffer. Because of the rolling file technique used it probably only requires a 1GB or too, I often have under 10GB free on my LiveTV drive and I can play for hours and hours.

Many thanks to Martint123 for the directx hint. Dxdiag reported that I was up to date but installing the June 2010 redistributable fixed the slow menus and the slow channel changing in one fell swoop Smile

Interesting points from Mvallevand and Reddwarf about drive use. So I guess I can cross a, d & e off my list of npvr problems!

Wondering if © ie stuttering is more likely a codec or just an xp issue. Is win7 preferred? SP1? Any ideas re the flickering epg? What's supposed to show up when you hit the i button?

I am sure © is machine and codec dependent. I have an old IGP and with 1080i/AC3 I don't have stuttering on LiveTV.

I think the Info key toggles inset video, I don't have the remote to test. Alt-B or Blue turn on the OSD information.

Really pleased to see 2.0.3 is out.. it's great timing as my spanned disk started dying the other day. I've had to turn off the GBPVR machine for nearly 2 weeks, until I could get my replacement drive and find time to fix/upgrade. Managed to save all my recordings, just got to try and get them reimported - I screwed up something and they're not showing in GBPVR.

For what it's worth, this thread has convinced me to take the plunge to NPVR.

(So.. just need to figure out how to import the recordings there.)
