Turns out it was all down to RAM. Anything over 4GB and both the PVR-500 and PVR-250 cards basically don't work. So, I've dropped down my box to 2GB, which I'm not particularly happy about, but at least DVB reception is back. I'll be dumping Hauppauge in favour of the new BlackGold T2 card after this.
Of course, true to form, the remote still doesn't work and I can't find any irremote.ini file in Win7.

Well, in summary:
The PVR-500 doesn't like 4GB RAM or more. Less than that, it will detect DVB channels fine, but the Hauppauge IR remote does not work.
The PVR-250 will similarly give up trying after 4GB RAM, but under that the IR remote will work (slowly), it just won't detect any DVB channels!
I'm considering some sort of barely-working hybrid by using both cards at the same time, one for remote control duties, one for TV reception. My only alternative is the 500 with an ancient ATI Remote Wonder 1 that just seem to be like more grief than is really necessary after looking through some of the forums. Do modern MCE certified remotes work any easier with nPVR? Is there any remote alternative that's as easy as the Hauppauge IR models?

You could try 32-bit. This will use about 3.5GB of 4GB memory. Its better than 2GB!

They are not, although I may have misspoke with model numbers; I've been using these cards for nearly five years as DVB-T cards. Casing of the little cards says DVB-T 90002, and the 500 is a WinTV-NOVA-T-500. Both models are DVB-T.

I've been using a Nova-T-500 with Win 7 64 bit and 8gb ram for about a year and it's worked perfectly the entire time.
Are you sure you have the right drivers?

Tempting, but annoying...
Out of interest, if you use a remote, what one do you use? As these cards are now 5-6years old I was considering replacing them with the new BlackGold T2 card, but it'll also mean a new remote.

As sure as I can be. Windows 7 picked up its own drivers, but when the 500 failed I tried the driver package from the Hauppauge site. When that failed I pulled 4GB of RAM and it started detecting channels, but the remote still doen't work. What driver package do you use, and did you have to modify them at all? And does your IR remote work with the card?

Device manager says the drivers are version 4.3.27240.0. I didn't modify them at all and the IR remote works.

Did you go to the US version of the Hauppauge site by any chance? They seem to offer different drivers. And do you have different drivers installed for your two cards?

Nope, UK site, and I'm using v4.3.27240.0 as well. And currently I only have the one card installed; the Nova-T-500. I figure if I get that working I won't need the two other cards.
