Finally decided to move over from GBPVR. Using latest NPVR 2.03. Got the server set up successfully but I'm getting an error on the client machine. I can confirm that the server and directory names are correct and that I can access the network shares on the client computer.

I'd post logs, but I don't know where they are located on NPVR. Attached is the actual error. I get this when I go to Recordings or the Guide. Thanks for the help.

I think you've got your server database share pointing to the wrong directory, so the client isnt finding a npvr.db3, but it is a writeable directory so it instead created an empty npvr.db3 file.

Thanks. To confirm, the actual db3 file should exist in the NPVR installation directory on the server machine (c:\Program Files\NPVR), correct?

No. By default, its in \\yourservername\users\public\npvr on the server which you must be able to browse to on the client.

(thats for Vista/Win7, its different I think for XP)

You will also find the logs folder in the same place

Server: Ci5 2500k, 3GB, Windows Server 2012, nPVR 3.5.7. 2xWinTV-DVB-T USB, 1xWinTV-DVB-T PCI, 2 x BlackGold DVB-T, 1xPCTV290E and 1xPCTV460E on Astra 28.2 E.
clients: RPI2, Acer R3700, PCH-A110, NUC, 3xSamsung Smart TV

Aha. Thanks, that's different than what it was in GBPVR. I searched for the db3 file and found it here (XP):

~\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\NPVR

Now, another dilemma because Windows does not allow you to share any folders under the Documents and Settings across the network workgroup. Options?

On XP I usually move the whole thing to C:\Users\Public\NPVR and edit the registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NPVR\DataDirectory to point to that location.

Thanks. I was trying to share the folder under advanced security settings, but wasn't having any luck. I'll use your suggestion.

That seemed to have done the trick. Thanks again.

Having just 'wired' the media-centre to the network, it was time to install some clients that were not reliable in the wireless network. Naturally I experienced the same problem as above when running XP on the server.

An alternative solution is to set the security on the advanced security options, but since I am not on a domain, this tab does not appear (as darag2358 reports) . The steps are:

  1. Boot in safe mode
  2. select properties of folder to share (ie application data\npvr
  3. select the security tab
  4. give full control to everyone (create the 'everyone' user if not present)
  5. share folder as normal
see this post. This link also refers to an XP patch that will enable the security tab to appear without having to boot in safe mode.

That does work, but I suspect that Windows Update will put everything back after an update. A bit cumbersome also, in my opinion better to put it in c:\users\public on XP too Wink
