Using XP I found it easiest to move the data directory to “Shared Docs” which is actually “Documents and Settings\all users\docs”, but you have to use regedit to chance the location of the NPVR “DataDirectory”. Once you have shared it you need to ensure the NPVR directory is writable from the client. The NPVR directory on the server should be listed under “My network places” on the client so create then delete a test file in the directory.

The next thing to do is to add NextPVR.exe and NRecord.exe to the firewall exceptions on the server. Although not as necessary its a good idea to do the same on the client. Then if the “Server Name” and “Database Share” have been correctly entered for your server then you should be able to view “TV Guide”, “Recordings” and “Live TV” from the client.

This thread keeps bugging steeb Big Grin

In fact I went away to Prague for the weekend and amongst my exploits had one of these strange looking beers.

Anyway quite sad, probably, to go away and be bugged by something totally NextPVR related and still to come home bugged by it

But should users have to work this hard if setting up a client with NextPVR and an XP based server?

I look forward to a heated debate Wink

Na zdraví

Maybe you should have had more than one of these strange looking beers...Big Grin

Maybe I should, but then again I suspect one green beer was enough Big Grin

You should have seen my lunchtime snack of pork ribs (too big for a photo!)

seriously though, even with XP on the wane is this a de facto that the NextPVR db is not accessible by default on an XP server to a NextPVR client? Or would the one extra green beer have made me read this differently?

That's where I put my data directory too... IMHO the main problem is that users (especially new ones) are confused about where their data directory is and the fact that there is a registry setting which needs to point to it.

Mmm, ah, the easiest way out would be if Sub forgot about XP's program data and put it in C:\Users\Public\NPVR whatever the OS was. If it doesn't exist the installer could create it and after that it is go ahead for the geeks to move it to another location.

Thanks Alex, but maybe I did have one green beer too many? Should not the default install path set the data directory to somewhere accessible? This should not involve a manual registry change?

Or my preferred option allow the user to select their own location for the data directory at installation time like they can for the main program files.

Hiya Jaggy, or yes that too, provided on an XP install (any O/S install) the db is not somewhere that is then later inaccessible for a client?
