codec selection tool?

Does anyone know of or use a codec selection tool with Windows 7?

I have a few videos on my library (not recorded with GB-PVR) that won't play, and last time I messed around installing new codecs, those trampled on the working ones and I spend a week in pure codec hell.

I used a tool in Win XP that would let me adjust the merit, but with MS providing their own decoders (which mostly work okay), I need something in Win 7 to help me.

I wish there were something that'd just let me pick e.g. I want to do <filter name here> for AC3 and so on.

Thanks, that helped a little. I seem to now, once again, be stuck in decoder hell. Even with NPVR settings selected for ArcSoft, CoreAVC is insisting on overriding that and using itself for playback. Why? ARGH.

EDIT: Got it, I had to revert to 2.0 of CoreAVC, the latest wanted to run the whole show.

As an aside, any codec gurus out there know why MS' default decoders work GREAT on one of my PCs, but on an absolutely identical unit, they are choppy has heck? It's got to be they aren't taking advantage of the hardware acceleration of my video card - a nVidia gts 450 with plenty of horse power.
