Still no joy. I do have the option of moving this machine to Win7 (which some of the forum posts seem to indicate is a good option), but if there's anyway to determine if this will help beforehand (rather than having some hardware limitation, or missing some obvious setting) it would obviously save me a whole heap of bother. Theoretically should this hardware rendering work on any machine or is there a minimum GPU spec required?

Do you have Windows Media Player installed? If not I'd try installing 9 and then 10. However if this is for your client 2, I wouldn't bother.

wmp11 installed and working on client 1 (main lounge TV), so not that.
I don't expect much from client 2 (kitchen) so am happy that it still chugs along at all!

It did not help here either, I'm beginning to suspect that it has to do with whether the hardware supports DirectX or not.

It's either hardware or xp. I stuck npvr on my modestly specced but nearly new work pc and it worked fine, so there's no inherent problem with npvr

hardware problem confirmed. the PIII with its nvidia card is working fine. time to go to the shops (again!)
