gEd Wrote:Seriously, in my experience, Germans generally speak English very well.
I work with people from all over the world and German people speak the best English. Better than some British people in fact...

Mr SD I know that you are not fishing for compliments but your English is very very very good and I have said that before somewhere on a thread, and loves gEd's comment. Definitely much better English than some English people.

Of course the best way to learn is to live natively in a country but then again where to live in England for a while where the English is good?! It is not demographic. I would suspect it is about learning and education etc....

cheers Mr SD

P.S. I have often used translators to try to put some of your German comments into English and they never to come out right. Google seemed to be the closest!

Many dear thanks, Mr steeb, for your friendly words.
But I quite often recognize my deficits of the English language myself. For example if I have a problem in NPVR and I attempt to represent it. Often enough I do simply not find the suitable words and attempt to describe differently.
And that rings then quite strangely.

Unfortunately the possibility does not have to learn the English language I in another country since I simply lack the money for that.

I do not understand why so many translators|translation program have such deficits. In particular with|in the case of translations English - German and German - English.

Many greetings
SD

EDIT: this translation doesn't look good. -.-

I also think your English is really good, but I never know what you mean with the words you put in stars, eg *buck* ?

chatt = [ATTACHMENT NOT FOUND]
suspect = [ATTACHMENT NOT FOUND]

I thought, it were "well known short words" for english speaking people. ^^

Your translation is better than Lucy, but Lucy was understandable except for the German words it couldn't translate. Maybe Lucy would be a good starting point to speed up translation but I suspect it would be better for you to just carry on writing like you do. I am sure it will become easier and let's keep it in content, this is only an internet forum, not an English Exam...

It means, or is supposed to mean so much: "I get myself one under that" or "I masturbate".
The "dick" is the "palm" and it's "weaving" while ... you know what i mean. ^^;

LOL. Probably best if you avoid the sexual metaphors for a while....

"Ich würde mir am liebsten einen von der Palme wedeln.
I am coming over to Germany next month, I will use this phrase in a bar and see what happens...
“If this is the way Queen Victoria treats her prisoners, she doesn't deserve to have any.”

I think you're right. I should just read and write more in english forums or watch english movies.

Mhm, yeah ... translating metaphors isn't my strength. ^^

No, well certainly not common phrases for me, I am so glad that Iain posed the question, I always wondered what "Buck" was Big Grin

so there you go, you do not have to move to England, just ask on this forum and we will try to help you with your English, which is so good already anyway! Of course you may learn some bad English too Wink

Oh my ... i imagened what gEd wrote above ... coming over to germany and say this sentence. I am laughing the whole time since he wrote it. XD

My wife is already watching at me and wondering why i would laugh the whole time ... ^^;

One of the finest things in life is to learn something new. Smile

Again, thank you all for your very, very nice words and support. Please remember: If i write some stuff which sounds very harsh to you, then please tell it to me. Under normal circumstances i wouldn't write harsh things, but sometimes you're thinking to write something "normal" and it's hurting someone.

So i'll stay with lucy software and google translator for fallback, if i can't find the real words and try to write all other things (like before) be my own.

Indeed Mr SD, but the finest thing of all is this:

Quote:why i would laugh the whole time ... ^^;

laughter is the bestest thing of all (bad English, no such thing as 'bestest'. Best.) I told you bad English from me sometimes!

It brings us all together in the whole world, a bit of laughter, and the steeb family has not had a lot of laughter for a while :-(

I have never once mis-understood a comment from you or thought you were harsh. I am sure some of the posts I have written have hurt people far much more!

Quote:So i'll stay with lucy software and google translator for fallback, if i can't find the real words and try to write all other things (like before) be my own.

seems like a great plan. And thanks btw for getting the analog wiki pages going Wink

very best
