convert ts but keep subtitles?

I just noticed that the ts files have subtitles in there. Is there a way to convert but also keep the subtitles? I'm thinking MKV through handbrake? Has anyone tried this?

Here Iin Canada the subtitles you would be getting are closed captioning and your best bet is to use CCExtrctor to create an .srt file.
