Hi Guys,

I have an mpeg 2 ts file that was made from 720i hdtv that I'd like to convert to an xvid file (or mkv, but would prefer xvid).

It looks good and all, but it's only 20 minutes of video and is 2.5gig so I'd like to crunch it down to something a bit more reasonable.

I looked on the net but didn't find a easy to follow guide. I did find some software that says it'll do it, but most were kind of expensive and I couldn't find any reviews or anything to help me sort out which ones are worth it and which ones aren't.

Anyone have any suggestions for tutorials or software?

Thanks!

The reason there are so many guides is there are so many formats, and what works for one file might not work for another

If you want to keep it 1280x720 convert to h264 mkv with Handbrake. If you want xvid I'd first transcode it to DVD widescreen in one step and then treat it like a DVD with AutoGK If you want to shrink to 720x480 30 fps you obviously have to make a lot of sacrifices.

I don't recommend anything but trial and effort. Who knows, you might even get lucky with just AutoGK on this file.

Thanks Martin, you always seem to be able to get me on the right path!

HDTV2DVD worked fine to get it to DVD format, FairUse Wizard worked fine to get it to xvid format, Smile

Thanks soooo much for pointing me in the right direction Martin! The video turned out beautifully (it was a video of my daughter marching in a holiday parade that was aired on the local tv station). Smile
