Sorry to be posting something so basic, but how the hell are you all controlling volume?

I read posts about selecting between master vol and local (I can't find any such settings in misc2 or anywhere else). I read posts about using left and right (keyboard buttons), but I can't see any indication of anything happening when I do this.

I look up keyboard shortcuts, but there are none listed for volume - it just states for remote use Vol up and down. This does not work on my remote - unsurprising, considering I set up my remote through EventGhost, so it doesn't do anything I haven't told it to.

What I want to do:

Control volume (obviously) and mute, using keyboard and remote (I can set the buttons myself as long as I know what keyboard buttons to emulate etc). I also really want to volume to be local (ie not system volume) so that it doesn't affect the other apps which require sound out.

Obviously someone knows how to do some of this, unless everyone is watching TV with no sound! Any help appreciated...

NPVR has no volume function. The volume is handled by Windows.
I use EventGhost to control all NPVR commands including Windows volume.
You can set the the % of change to your liking. I use 7% up and 14% down since a decrease in volume is often required faster than an increase.
EventGhost can also be used to control aother apps like VLC, Windows Media Player, and even mouse movement and clicks.

If using a Hauppauge remote you may need to MERGE the regedit file so EG can see the device:
Copy to notepad and save as * .reg run by right click "merge"

Thanks for the info - would be handy to have this particular info in the wiki.

That is a shame, though. I was really hoping to get away from anything that uses using System volume, as on my previous HTPC it was a pain as (when using different apps for different things) - when one app turns down the system vol, another which uses it's own vol can't turn it back up, so you have to go back into the previous app just to turn the vol back up.

Did NPVR previously have a 'local' vol control when it was GBPVR? Can't remember as it's such a long time since I tried it out. Did see something which suggested this on this forum...

Ideally, I really wanted to have everything unified in XBMC (and still have a some hope of there being a NPVR plugin for XBMC, as NPVR seems way more stable than ForTheRecord and MediaPortal TV, at least for my TV card).

Suppose I'll have to rig up an EventGhost chained macro so that when switching from XBMC to NPVR, it sets system vol to a set level before opening NPVR, and then when switching back again, it sets sys vol back to max.

My other problem is that I tried setting up the remote to change system vol while in NPVR (which worked, changing the sys vol), but the vol osd plugin didn't show anything on screen. Any ideas if this works in NPVR?

I use volumeOSD. I think I used it (or its predecessor) in GBPVR too.

Just so you understand, NPVR was not previously called GB-PVR. They're two completely different programs and share no code. Yes, GB-PVR had volume control. NPVR does not; I think volume control was a headache for sub over the years, as everyone wanted something different in that area... So he just crossed that headache off the list and let the users sort it for themselves.

are you on xp or win7? I had the quirks your describing on xp, and used the old gbpvr settings to iron them out. Now ive migrated to win7, I'm finding windows system volume control on win7 pretty good with npvr with out any fiddling or headaches.

Ah, thanks again guys.

Fuzzweed - I'm on Win7. Not getting the OSD to work was folder confusion on my part. Couldn't find a specific "Data" folder to unzip the plugin to, so put it in the application directory. Didn't think of looking under the "Public" user!

All works as designed now - although I would still much prefer it to use it's own volume, rather than System Volume, and still hopeful of an XBMC plugin...

Am I correct then that NextPVR is meant primarily for users with system level knowledge of Windows? I was looking for a "mute" feature. This post pretty much tells me there is not one. I want to control the volume independently on an application by application basis in real-time.

No not system level knowledge. It is primarily desinged for a 10 ft. interface. Normally mute on a Remote or Multimedia keyboard are performed on a system level.

I was thinking another option for mute is to disable the audio track with Alt-G
