Skip Problem

You'll definitely have this filter on your machine, or you wouldn't be able to use NextPVR. I guess it's possible the file has a different name on your Window's install, but I've never heard of it being in a different filename. You can check by running a utility like graphedit to see which .ax file holds the MPEG-2 Demultiplexer filter.

Well it is there, don't know why the explorer doesn't find it, but it is from 23.dec 2010.

news.ts has a gop that takes about a second and a half, so depending on exactly where you end up after the skip you might get audio pretty much straight away, but it might up to a second and half for the first iframe goes by in the stream for display. Also, I'm not sure why, but sometimes decoders dont deliver video until the second iframe, which can mean a worst case of about 3 seconds.

As you figured out, after I ran news.ts through a GOP fixer I did get instant skips.

mikeh's Day Planner file which seems to have a lot of internal time errors, does skip fine too.

The only file of all the samples that gives me the long delay is whurlton's Ghost Rider.

I'm thinking mine is an HDHomeRun/network issue though. Since disabling Fox HD on the HDHRs, I no longer have the issue of losing seek capabilities with shows recording from Fox. I'll test with SD channels too to see if I get the same results.

I have NPVR and PVRX2 installed on XP(32). I have just switched back and forth between them playing and skipping the same ts file. PVRX2 skips instantly with no delay to sound or video. NPVR not so much. I have done dozens of skips and the delay is truly random.

I just played news.ts in PVRx2 and the only difference for me is the video skips and then freezes for a few seconds until audio starts, sort of the reverse of NextPVR with audio and a blank screen. Either way it is 2-4 second before a/v is synced and the video is watchable.

It's interesting that your mpg2splt.ax is significantly older than other users. Infact, it's even a year older than the Win7 release date (which you mentioned you were using in the first post). I wonder if you've installed some software which has installed an old version of it.

Tried a quick test of a later mpg2splt.ax with no improvement. But, I may not have registered it correctly due to difficulty of copying a file into the System32 directory. I'm out of the loop until Friday; will try more then.

For the record, I'm sure surprised this worked well for you. PVRX2 had really crappy skipping of .ts files, and we were getting almost continous complaints about it's ts skipping. It didn't know how long recordings were, made wildly inaccurate guesses etc. Alot of those short comings were addressed in NextPVR, but obviously some people are still having problems.

I guess I must have been in a minority then, because skipping in PVRX2 (with UK HD broadcast .ts files) was perfect. Every single time.

With NextPVR, skipping seems generally ok for me too. But I do get occasional issues on resumption from pause, where it will suddenly jump (usually forwards) by a few minutes, or worse yet freeze for 30 seconds+ before resuming. These issues aren't frequent enough for me to capture nor annoying enough to really care much about, which is why I've never bothered reporting them, but - in my case at least - it's one aspect where PVRX2 was definitely performing better. Both applications on 32bit Windows 7 with the Arcsoft decoder.

This is an XP version of mpg2splt. It is my understanding that it is updated in XP by the DirectX runtime. I have run the DirectX runtime and it tells me that I am up to date.

The same computer also has W7. The version of mpg2splt on W7 is dated 23 December 10. It is my understanding that mpg2splt is not updated by DirectX in W7. W7 is fully up to date as reported by Windows Update.

Windows Media Centre supports skips when playing video using ctrl-f and ctrl-b. I have played files recorded in NPVR in WMC and they skip very nicely in WMC. The same files freeze for 10 - 15 seconds when skipping in NPVR.
