Graham - can you create a c:\temp directory and set HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\NPVR\LogSlipFile=1, then reproduce this problem with news.ts where you'd play it for 15 seconds, then skip and get this long delay. After this zip and attach the nextpvr.log and c:\temp\reader.log.

Your broadcaster must have super-pristine broadcasts and clocks then - PVRX2 had also sorts of problems with having with not knowing the duration of recordings, and inaccurate skipping, audio/video sync issues, lockups etc. NextPVR's ts playback is far from perfect, but was a big improvement over GBPVR/PVRX2. Some of the long time complainers on GBPVR/PVRX2 TS skipping like johnsonx42 remember it well...

Most people that think of GBPVR/PVRX2 having better skipping were actually using .dvr-ms or .mpg rather than .ts.

.ts for sure. Mainly BBC stuff. It was dvr-ms with SD though.

By the time that I realised that I had not lost news, I had already done news2 so here is news2 ...

Start NPVR
Start play of recording
Wait 15 secs
Press Skip
Video and audio freeze for 20 secs then starts
Wait 15 secs
Press skip
Skips immediately and nicely

Sounds like Graham and I have the exact same problem. Same symptoms in NPVR and good skipping in WMC on NPVR's ts files. PVRX2 skips much better in my NPVR ts files on the troublesome box, than NPVR; I haven't tried Grahams news.ts in PVRX2. Sounds like the later mpg2splt is not the solution either, since he has the problem with the later version than I had, and I saw no change after registering the new version (using DSFilter Manager). Would have been nice if all it took was an update of this file.

If you rerun DSFilter manager and check the version, did the update take? Sometimes Windows is over protective of it's system files and reverts them.

Looking closely at these logs, it appears the actual skip itself is happening quickly, and the reader moves to the correct part of the file, an starts delivering samples from the new location, but the graph stops asking for any more samples - presumably because something downstream has indicated its not ready. This will mean either the demux or the decoders or the video renderer, or an issue with the clock (which is generated by the audio device you're using).

To narrow it down, I can probably insert some a component between the demux and the decoders, and between the decoders and the renderers, so we can see what exactly is getting delivered input, but not producing any output.

There is a couple of things we can try, but it'll need to wait until tomorrow.

Updated the mpg2splt and, as expected, no change. Also tried a different sound card (on board Realtek sound vs the old Turtle Beach Santa Cruz) and also no change. Tried some different audio renderer settings and no change. BTW, does NPVR need to be restarted after making a renderer or decoder change? Maybe these old 2003-2005 era sound devices just don't work right with Win7. But then, why would PVRX2 and WMP work?

Sub, your theory of the the reader skipping to the right point, but the graph not running sounds right; it would explain why the CPU goes to zero while frozen.

one think I noticed are the non-standard recording locations:-

Mike: 2012-02-20 15:55:50.675 [DEBUG][1] PlaybackPositionHelper.GetPlaybackPosition(\\MIKE\Video\Modern Family\Modern Family_20120208_21002131.ts)
Graham: 2012-02-23 20:46:31.781 [DEBUG][1] Playing video file: F:\$$$$$TV\Manual Recordings\Default_20120223_20102020.ts
[edit] actually maybe $$$$$TV is just a strange folder name so not relevant]

The troublesome box is accessing the NPVR recorded file on box MIKE over the wire network from the NPVR or PVRX2 Videos menu. Local files on the trouble box have the same problem.
