I recollect some talk about a wake event for a scheduled recording. Am I correct? If so, could I get some direction?

NextPVR will ask Windows to be awake at the time any recording are due to start, so assuming your PC is well behaved, then it should wake the PC from standby/hibernate to record.

Assume that this also applies to nightly EPG updates?

Ok, so if Recordings and EPG updates wake the PC up AND there is no user intervention (eg keyboard and mouse activity), when does windows put the PC back to sleep?
I ask this because I do a lot of transcoding with Postprocessing.bat, but these processes are just sitting there until I wake up the PC by mouse activity, then they resume Postprocessing, i.e. the Batch files don't hold the PC out of going to sleep.

All it does is ask Windows to make sure it's awake at the time a recording is due to start. You can of course tell your PC to go to sleep after x minutes of inactivity though.

Are you using windows 7? Win 7 is so much more aggressive that it'll put the computer back to sleep even if it isn't done!! You'll have to change your power scheme to not sleep during transcoding.

The unfortunate thing about Win7 is that there's a difference between a user induced wake up and a scheduled wake up. If Win7 is woken up by a user it'll stay awake for the set time in your control settings otherwise there's a time out of about 2 minutes despite your task still running. I can only guess that it's to reduce the number of false wakeups. I've googled and you can change the timeout counter from 2 minutes to anything you want through a registry hack. My solution as stated above was to use powercfg to change power schemes during transcodes.
My problem is compounded because I've got an SSD (Sandforce 1!!- buy one if you dare!!) that will blue screen if my transcodes are still running and it goes to sleep.

Well jam you have very cleverly pre-empted the content of my next post as I was fishing for knowledge to explain why I am having issues.
Yes I am running Win7. I have turned OFF the computer going to sleep or hibernation from the power management options (set to NEVER). The only way my PC is sent to sleep is that the last Postprocessing.bat to finish transcoding calls for sleep using the "rundll32 powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState 0,1,0" command. This works well when the wake-up was induced by me, e.g. me using the PC before or during NPVR is recording, but if NPVR wakes the machine to record by itself and there has been no user intervention, the PC will go to sleep again before the bat files have finished. I am investigating using task scheduler to wakeup the machine as there is an option in there to wake PC up for task, Caffeine (for the PC that is, not me) or use "keepwoke" from pBS to see if this solves my problem. My first attempt of using Caffeine for PC failed to work as I think it is called from Postprocessing batch file which is run in the services environment (rather than user) gave it issues, maybe due to lack of Admin privileges. As you may guess I am still new to Win7!
