No joy using the recording service. Any attempt to record kills the service, but with an interesting event viewer .net message (attached) regarding access being denied to the recordings folder. I have not consciously changed anything there. Is this because a service can't access a user's folder? Do I need to do something in folder permissions/security?

Yeah, it sounds like you've somehow managed to set some odd persmissions that is disallowing access to the directory. I dont have specific instructions for what you'd need to do to fix this, but start by taking a good look at the permissions on that folder. Something must be set that is restricting access.

Pretty much the only difference when running from the service vs running from the command line is the user account it runs as.

In looking at the folder properties, I have an "unknown user S-1-5..." or something like that. Is that related to the service? Or does the service come under "Everyone"? I'll do some checking, but at the moment, it looks like my test box is the same. Thanks, and I'll report back.

I have no ideat what that user is. The recording service doesn't try to do anything tricky with accounts - it just assumes it'll be able to write to whatever directory you nominate.

This is the first time I've seen a user report this problem though, so must be something non-standard on you machine setup.

I assume "everyone" is all user accounts, so will include the localsystem user account used by the recording service. (but other rule may deny permission)

After much Googling, I still was not able to restore access for the recording service to the recordings folder. So I created a new recordings folder, and it works fine. Lesson learned - if you mess up your Win7 permissions or security settings, your screwed. On to the next problem, which may or may not be related: EPG update deletes the recordings from the database. I'll start a separate thread with logs for that.

BTW - would there be any possibility to make Nrecord handle the "access denied" issue without crashing?

I have already made a modification to the next release that would have marked the recording as failed, and have set the failure message to the message Windows returned ie "Access to the path 'E:\Recordings\House Hunters\' is denied" in this case.

You're the first person I remember with this problem though, so I'm not sure anyone will ever see it.

It would be good if no one did. Smile But, given some of the things people get into here, it could happen.
