With the new feature of Multiple Recording Directories -- would it be possible to provide an "automatic mode" that would select the directory with the most free space.

This would allow us to setup directories on a number of separate drives -- and the system would automatically select the drive with the most free space as the storage location. Using multiple drives would vastly increase the amount of recording storage space -- and a "automatic mode" would allow the drives to fill up in a automatically controlled manner -- unmanaged by the end user.

So -- multiple drives with the target storage location automatically selected based on free space at recording setup time (or when the recording actually starts which would be better) -- is this possible?

Try the attached patch, and add the following to the <Recording> section of config.xml:

<DefaultDirectoryChoice>spread</DefaultDirectoryChoice>

NOTE: this will only work with local drives, not network drives. If you have network drives, they'll be ignored when determining which drive to us. If all drives are network drives, it'll default to the first one.

If it doesn't work for you, please post the nrecord.log.

sub, this is a great feature. I haven't had a chance to test it myself, but it will really help me and I'm sure many other users.

the feature to ignore network drives is great too; when I saw this feature requested in the announcement thread I thought "but what if I have some locations I really don't want used for recordings, but only for manual archives?". I can just map those locations as network drives (even if they are local), then they won't be used for recordings. perfect.

I imagine you'll make this a checkbox on the Recording settings screen in the next release?

I have been away traveling on business for the last few weeks and have not had a chance to test this -- has anyone else given it a try?

My goal here was to install three new large terabyte drives (all of the same size) and have them all fill up with NPVR recordings in a controlled manner -- without any intervention on my part.

I'm late to the party - as usual - but this is a feature I've been hoping for for a long time... awesome!
