If setting up a machine as NPVR recording server (using DVB-C devices), meaning all recordings (and live TV) will only be watched on clients (mainly NMT's but maybe also NextPVR/PC-clients), how important is it to get all the "difficult stuff" like renderers, decoders, codecs, filters etc configured and fine-tuned on the server?
Very important, because clients are stupid and rely completely on the software on the server?
Or not important at all, because the clients do everything, and the server just sends the transport streams "unmodified" to the client?

And kind of same question when it comes to how fast a client will be able to change live-TV channel. Which parts of the software installed and configurations made on the server are important to get a nice and quick channel change on a client?

The NMT's have their own built in codecs etc. so the server doesn't need to be able to play back anything & they will work fine..... For PC clients you need to get all the "difficult stuff" (as you put it) working right on each client but it's not necessary on the server.

If the server is not doing anything else than running the recording service it should change channels as fast as it can right out of the box. If it is busy with transcoding or other tasks beside I would recommend running the recording service at a higher priority.
