How doni find out the server address for the Npvr server in the first place?

I have gone through the wiki articles ten times but haven't found information on how to get the ip address of the npvr server

Do I get it through a comand prompt or something if so please tell me how

Sorry i just need help in finding out the ip address of the Npvr server so I can put the info into xbmc I know port Is right and password is 0000 but how do I get the server ip

Thanks forceeading please help so I can get using this great software

for the name of the npvr server, see Control Panel->System. for the ip address, there are many ways to find out, but the simplest to explain is to open a command prompt (start->all Programs->Accessories->Command Prompt) and enter "ipconfig". you're looking for your IPv4 address, which will most likely be 192.168.0.x or 192.168.1.x.

in the XMBC configuration, try entering the ip address for the server name.

Also if xbmc is on the same PC, it's best to leave it as 127.0.0.1 If not, what johnsonx42 wrote is correct but you are going to want to eventually use a static IP.

oh, yes, I just ASSumed he was talking about two different computers. 127.0.0.1 is localhost, always best when communicating on the same computer

Thanks dude will try this out tomorrow and yes Johnson you got it right two separate machines

And if it's on the same machine no configuration is needed as I just fired up xbmc and choose npvr as the server and it just worked but the external machine that npvr is not on that's what I needed help on

Any thanks to both of you i will try the cmd prompt method tomorrow btw why did you say a static ip eventuantly do youbmean every time I turn on the pc it will give a different ip meaning xbmc will keep losing it settings and I take it this will became a problem hence why you said static ip am I right I guess that thevreason you said static ip evently

What about using just the name method of the server will that still bring problems like the dynamic ip?

If not then I would rather do the server name method so what was it in windows control panel then I should get name of server is tat in systems under control panel? Isn't that normally workgroup or something am right?

Give the machine that does your recording a static IP (ie server)
otherwise if your router restarts it may give the server a new ip number then yes xbmc will be looking in the wrong place

static ip is better for net working (short answer)
the name will work most of the time but every now and then things will go wrong and its hard to narrow down to it just been the name
cuts all the workgroup BS out of it

Stustunz What about name method instead of static ip? Won't that work same even though I restart the recording machine

Of it does is it like in this example jpeg is the name of server in this example starting with COYOTEMOON

Here's the example jpeg link http://0.tqn.com/d/macs/1/0/f/A/-/-/win7...00x379.jpg

In your example ScaryWin7 would be the computer name to use and it would work assuming your pc's are all on the same workgroup. However using this name assumes that NETBIOS name resolution is reliable and my experience is it sometimes takes a bit of time to work after machines power up.

Thanks Martin

So will my alliterative name method work assuming netbios is realiblr and I wait a few minutes for it to register like you advised if not I need a tutorial on setting static ip lol

But thinking about it I did try computer name before in xbmc and it still did not connect I'm sure I have done everything right I even installed the auto patch installer from this forum allowed acres to the three files from firewall settings I sure I have all the right settings and patches but keep giving me a connection is lost no server started but I did start server and enabled pvr with xbmc

Does that mean the name server method did not work in my case like you said above unreliable? Iwill need your guys help tomorrow but thanks for all of you for the help so far

Or thevreason it may not have worked is I Could have not used uppercase when entering computer name in xbmc npvr app same as the name on my pc

cause? Why didn't it work maybe I made an error on using lowercase when entering pc name in xbmc app of npvr

Ok once I learn how to use only static ip then is that all I need for xbmc to workbwith npvr on a second machine

DNS isn't case sensitive, maybe you aren't all on the same workgroup? You can test if dns is working at a command prompt typing

ping scarywin7
