I used to use GBPVR and it seemed to automatically hibernate at the end of a recording (assuming there wasn't one following on).
In reality, this was a bit of a pain because it would shutdown while I was watching a recording via the web interface.

Does nPVR have an internal hibernate function in the same way? or is it up to the user to tell the machine to hibernate when idle?

I have used a screen saver called "Hibernator" that will hibernate only when the CPU/DISK/NETWORK activity drops below a certain level .. just wondering if that may be the best way forward.

It's the same as GBPVR before it. ie, it doesn't send the machine into hibernate/standby. It will tell the Windows the machine is still in-use while recording/livetv etc. The user can of course tell Windows to hibernate after x minutes of inactivity. If you're using a the web interface or other clients though, you're probably best to leave your backend running, since no scheme is going to help you if the machine is asleep when a client wants to access it.

Using windows 7, I just let windows go to sleep (S3) after 20 mins of idle. Works well for me. Very occasionally another (unidentified) app will keep windows awake requiring a reboot to clear it.

I use a WOL utility on my pc/phone or router to wake the pc if I wish to access it remotely (and have the network card set to wake on lan)

Likewise, I very successfully use WOL to wake my old power hungry server from PC clients and NMT's.
