<sigh> I am finding out what the "A" in ADSL means - still uploading the two snips to dropbox! says an hour remaining.... methinks my ISP is taking the piss.....

Logs attached in the meanwhile. playing the file with blank screen for a couple of minutes and then about 10 seconds of video before I stopped it.
I'm guessing the first bit could well be encrypted data before the network and connection to my linux server got stabilised??

The NMT isn't crashing but it isn't finding valid video

Since it's not AAC, the ffmpeg included with NPVR should work. Create a batch file with the following (replace "XX" with the number of seconds to cut from the start of the file and adjust path to ffmpeg if necessary):

Drag and drop the problem file on it.

It should rename your file to .bak and remux it.

Two samples. The first is the requested 100mb and is all blank viewing. The second is a 200mb chunk (zipped to fit the free file hosting limit) and has around 10 secs of video at the end of the sample - it starts around 1:24.
I have fired up tsdoctor on a new pc and it is currently running "fixing PCR" and has been for about 30 minutes.

Thank you mr whurlston, I'll give your ffmpeg script a try. I know it is a powerful tool, but I can't seem to get my head round video options and code words!. More later when I've tried it.

I just tested it and the ffmpeg bundled with NPVR won't work. Download a newer ffmpeg from http://ffmpeg.zeranoe.com/builds/ (any build 2013 or newer should work).

You will not need the "-ss XX" at all, the empty section at the beginning is automatically cut.

Yes, it just finished with a non-playable file of 250mb. I'll grab the new ffmpeg shortly. Excellent that it will sort the chop size out itself.

Martin, the file seems to play fine if you can filter the pids ok, If you can't do it with fmpeg try http://www.pjdaniel.org.uk/mpeg/ start with PID 0,1, 512,640,660

Thanks both, currently running the new ffmpeg on it (might be leaving it running and get an early night for a change).
Martin. I'll have a look at the stream analyser in the morning - if nothing else, it is about time I tried to understand the innards of these video files.

I guess I will be getting more troublesome files now that I am moving from using a PVR150 to grab the old analogue output from the STB to using a DVB-S2 card to tune directly and decrypt on the PC
If only it was as quick and easy chopping 2 minutes off the front of a files as it is from the end!
