Just wondering has anyone tried some of the new low cost x86 Windows tablets as NPVR Servers? Was considering getting one to try it out, but just wondering if someone has already done it and would say it's not worth the hassle. Smile

The server CPU and RAM requirements a low so I don't see why not. The hassle will be the powered USB hub for tuners, disks, and wired ethernet.

I'm really tempted to give this a go. Some week when I get a bit of time I may try this. Smile

I do not see any way that can be a Server ... the main thing needed on the Server is linkspeed and Wireless by it self barely plays HD content imagine trying to record a stream over wireless and view a stream. I do not see that happening. ... maybe as a client but definitely not a server.
NEXTPVR Server Acer AM3910-UR10P Intel Core i3-540 3.06GHz Desktop, Windows 8.1 Pro. 64bit, 2 HdHomerun units(OTA Tuners) , 1 HD Homerun Prime , for a total of 7 HD Tuners , LinkSYS 16 port Gigabyte Switch.

I don't see any difference to this as a server then those using the RPi which also uses USB 2.0 for all the i/o. It's not a great backend but possible for playing around.

NYPlayer is looking at it in terms of his tuners (HDHRs) in which case, I would have to agree with him. But with USB tuners and for someone who would only need that as a Server/client and one more client, it might work. Definitely worth some tinkering.

Yep that was the way I was looking at it.

I'm guilty of doing it myself sometimes. I've been using my HDHRs for so long that USB tuners are almost a foreign concept.

Like I wrote first that USB is going to be a bottleneck regardless, 60MBs theoretical for everything half duplex yuck, but I'd still prefer wired usb ethernet to wifi for QoS. However if you offload the file share to a NAS and avoid NextPVR for playback it becomes primarily a recording backend much better than many of those mini-itx server from the golden era of PVR'ing Personally I've got x-newa setup to stream live tv directly from the HDHR too so the server doesn't even get touched except for serving the screens.

My two cents here and if money were no object, how about upgrading the wireless to AC standard which the bottom end around 960 or so MBits doubles that of USB 2.0, of course that's in perfect wireless world, then the HDHR network tuners should be able to be utilized. USB tuners are a foreign concept to me as well, I've always used the 2250/5 Haupauge tuners since my cable company has yet to encrypt
