Sat or cable?

I am looking into Direct TV as Time Warner now requires a digital converter box for every TV. More remotes, yuck! I know that there is a Roku channel for Time Warner and Direct TV. I am curious about which ties in best with my NPVR HTPC. Also, Google fiber is growing quick here in the Kansas City area, but will be a while before it reaches my remote area. Direct TV is offering a deal 30 bucks cheaper than TWC. I have an HP usb ir for my htpc harmony remote, but no irblaster to communicate with other devices. I use Plex to stream to the Roku...

Ideas?

I had a similar "problem" some years ago when I had to choose between cable or terrestial, after some thinking it all boiled down to a question of "where do I get the channels I really want to watch"
