NPVR freezes and hangs after a few seconds of operation of Live TV.

My installation comprises:
NextPVR 3.4.8 (dated 25th April 2015, no updates downloaded since then)
Enabled Device: AverMedia H752 TV Tuner displayed as AverMedia 7231 DVBT Tuner
Device Channels: 108 FreeView TV & Radio programs broadcast by UK (North West) Granada Winter Hill transmitter.

The following is a typical record of the actions taken in producing the fault:
Click Live TV.
After about 5secs TV programme opens full screen.
Between 30 and 60secs screen freezes and NPVR hangs.
Right click and select Exit to shut down NVPR.

Is there an incorrect setting somewhere in C:\Users\Public\NPVR ?

Please zip the logs folder and post the logs.

It's easier to find stuff in the logs if you tell us the time that the Live TV hangs.

Graham,

I have zipped the Log folder containing the log files relating to my NPVR freezing and hanging at 12:20 on 16 June 2015.
I copied it and tried to paste it here but it did not like it.
How do I send you an attachment containing the zipped folder?

Forgive my ignorance but I am new to this game.

When you have finished typing your post, click on the Go Advanced button (bottom right under the reply window) - scroll down till you see the Manage Attachments button - click on it - browse to wherever your zip file is on your computer, upload it, close the window and post your reply...

The ndigitalhost.log has ...

Quote:2015-06-16 12:20:29.070 [DEBUG][19] locked=0, present=0, strength=0, quality=0 (took 0ms to check)
2015-06-16 12:20:29.070 [DEBUG][19] DigitalRecorderDVBT::Tune@8
2015-06-16 12:20:29.114 [DEBUG][19] File size is 0

The ndigitalhost is the part of NextPVR that connects to the tuner and captures the broadcast stream. The log appears to be saying that NextPVR is not receiving any data from the tuner.

Edit: Can you record a show on the same channel and playback the recording okay?

It may be that the tuning or channel information stored in NextPVR is in a pickle after your earlier difficulties. I suggest that you delete all channels in Settings --> Channels. Click on the first channel, press and hold the Shift key and click on the last channel and then click the Delete button.

http://www.nextpvr.com/nwiki/pmwiki.php?...n.Channels

I suggest that you also delete the tuner device in Settings --> Devices. Right click on the device and select delete.

Reboot the computer and restart NextPVR to reset everything, the tuner device should automatically reappear in the device list. Configure the transmitter as before and rescan.

Carried out the actions you recommended as follows:-
Deleted all channels shown in “Settings -- > Channels” by selecting them then clicking the “Delete” button. Highlighted “Devices”, selected the tuner (AverMedia H752 displayed as AverMedia 7231 DVBT Tuner) by right clicking it and clicking “Delete Device” in drop down box. Clicked Yes when asked “Are you sure”. Clicked “OK”.Clicked “OK” and closed NPVR. Shut down PC and Restarted.

Opened NPVR at 10:47.

Clicked “Settings -- > Devices”.

Clicked the DVB-T tuner (AverMedia 7231 DVBT Tuner).

Clicked “Device Setup” box.

In “Country” box selected “United Kingdom”.

In “Region” box selected “Granada - Winter Hill New”.

Clicked “Scan” and 50 seconds later “Scan complete” appeared after scanning the 10 Mux frequencies transmitted from Winter Hill, listing 108 TV & Radio channels. Clicked OK.

Clicked “Channels” and clicked “Empty EPG”, confirmed it, then at 10:50 “Update EPG”. When done at 10:55, clicked “OK”.

(It took over 5 minutes to check all the frequencies again. Perhaps the “Update EPG” software should be modified to refer only to those frequencies associated with the channels successfully scanned earlier instead of the full set again. After all, DVB-T2 channels (554, 602, 737.8MHz) are not supported by a DVB-T tuner, NPVR does not support IPTV and Data (some 746 and 777MHz), and other low power transmissions (754, 762MHz). This mod would save a lot of EPG scanning time.)

At 11:01 on main screen, clicked “TV Guide” and double clicked programme playing on Channel 1.

Clicked “Record” and OK and allowed it to record. At 11:09 double clicked on the programme again and clicked “Cancel” followed by “Back”.

On main screen clicked “Recordings”, double-clicked the recorded programme, clicked “Play” and it played for 30 seconds or so before the screen froze. Waited a while and a message appeared “This recording was watched to completion ………. delete this recording?”. Clicked “Cancel” and “Back”.

(A later check of the stored .ts recording indicated it was 7:13:11 minutes long, however Windows Media Player stopped playing it after 42 seconds).

At 11:13 on main screen clicked “Live TV” and TV programme played for about 45 seconds before freezing.

NPVR hung, waited a while, then screen went black with a message “Encrypted Content” shown in top right corner. At 11:16 clicked Exit.

Created a zipped copy the Logs folder in C:\Users\Public\NPVR and attached a copy to this post.

I expect that it won't surprise you that all your good work appears to have made no difference at all. The messages in the log are exactly as before.

The message
Quote:locked=0, present=0, strength=0, quality=0
is what we usually see when there is a reception problem but that seems unlikely here because you are able to scan and find channels. I'm baffled.

I looked for and couldn't find a web page for your tuner. Please post a link to the page on the Avermedia site ... or elsewhere.

Plus, what happens when you click on a programme in the guide and select "Quick Record" so that you record the programme without ever going into Live TV? Does the programme play okay when played from Recordings?

Thanks

It already does that. When you hit 'Update EPG', it spends 60 seconds on each of the frequencies you have channels on. It doesn't do any other frequencies.

AverMedia TV Tuner Card

The tuner was built-in to the desktop PC when I bought it in September 2011.

The PC is a Windows 7 HP Pavilion P6565uk, (product number WY416EA#ABU, serial number CZC041DYB9, purchased from CPC 9 Sep 2011) fitted with an AverMedia H752 TV Tuner Card.

The PC uses Windows Media Centre (WMC) to tune in the channels and make recordings (although it looks like this will no longer be possible in Windows 10.).

When originally supplied the TV Tuner driver version was 2.2.64.80 dated 07/06/2012, but since then it has been updated. The new driver appears to call itself AverMedia 7231 DBT Tuner but I don’t know why.

I have found this link to the AverMedia H752 TV Tuner Card

Quick Record

Following your suggestion I …………
Clicked the “TV Guide”
Double clicked Channel 1
At 13:08 clicked “Quick Record”
At 13:13 clicked “Cancel”
This suggest the recorded programme should be about 5 minutes long, however when played in Window Media Player it stopped after 38 seconds.
