First thought - the recording service runs as the "localsystem" account. It probably doesn't access to your c:\users\ed directory.
Are the parameters correct in the NPVR setup? Previous message used {946} in the batch - note the parentheses.
I used to use IRSS and that worked with my MCE blaster but I don't think IRSS is being updated now. I also used to get the error you had and I think it's because of other programs taking over the blaster.

It works really well - though I think it lags a bit. I use an MCE blaster but it does have a USBUIRT built in compatibility. ***Note that if you do use this software that you may have to uninstall eventghost and any other remote software***. The support for LM Remote Key Map is decent on their forums.
