I'm slowly starting to gather a collection of movies within MyVideos and I've gotten to the point where I'm ready to begin to think about sorting the movies into genres.

I currently have MyVideos with the following directories:

TV Series
Movies
DVDs
Music Videos
Downloads
Paused Movies

Now my initial thought was to make sub-directories under the Movies directory for genres. But then I thought that something I may think is Sci-Fi other people in my house may look for under action or whatever.
Then I thought what I need is to be able to tag a movie with multiple genres and then have MyVideos be able to display virtual directories based on these tags.

Then you tag a film with Sci-Fi, Action, Drama then it appears in all of these virtual directories.

These tags could be anything you wanted (genres, actors, directors) and the user could add new tags themselves, but a base set of genres would be a good thing to include if this were put into MyVideos.

It's just an idea and it may have being suggested before, but it seems like a nice flexible solution to me.

I'd like to hear what anyone else thinks about this, Reven especially of course.

im not a big fan of sorting by genres, ive never seen this implemented all that well, and thus never seen an advantage of doing this. and since the database pretty much just stores everything based on their relative filenames (eg "enterprise - 2x02 - carbon creek.avi" and not "c:\my videos\tv shows\enterprise\season 2\enterprise - 2x02 - carbon creek.avi"), you'll be missing a few videos (some have a knownlocation entry, but not all).

The video archive plug-in offers a display by Genre option. You can toggle between this and display by directory. For the genre option it uses the tags downloaded by IMDB to sort things so a movie can show up under multiple genres. Things that have no genre infor show up under "Unclassified". The plug-in also includes an editor (run outside of GBPVR) that allows you to change the genres (and other information) associated with movies.

Do you mean you've never seen genre sorting implemented well in the UI? If so why not be the first to make a good implementation of it.

I'm not sure what you mean here, I'm probably missing the point, why would I be missing a few videos?

I wasn't aware of that, although I'd like a single point of entry for my videos that I've chosen to save. I'm fine having xRecord as being the main entry point for newly recorded videos and MyVideos to access things I've decided to store long term, but I think that's as far as I'll be going.

For what it is worth, the video archive plug-in should (although I have not tested it in a while) import all of the video information from my videos so you could take a look at the video archive UI to see if you like the way genre display is done.

yes. and i wont be using this feature, so i have no basis on how to implement it, its much better if the person who is going to use this feature has some say in how it should be developed. otherwise you get a crap piece of software.

trust me you would be, never mind why.

if you were to design how you think my videos should handle this (ie draw some pics, have a clear design on how to do this) i would consider adding it, but dont expect me to do the entire work. ill code it but i have no idea how to design this. i hate the Sort By: Genre approach, its annoying.
