I checked the Temp directory now. I found four files. I clicked on the first three: I get something like radio commercials and such sounds. And the fourth one I got some error message saying it can't play the file; some other application is using it or something like that. But no video. I am attaching the error message:

For digital you are going to need to install and select an AC3 decoder

I only AC3 audio decoders listed, but no video AC3 decoders. This is the current setting. When I play live TV with this setting I get a radio sound on the black screen; still no video.

It could be a radio channel, in which case you'll get no video.

That brings us back to the basic question: how come NPVR doesn't pick up channels from ATI Wonder TV Tuner (650 HD) with Comcast TV channels? Or is it about time to quit the whole project?

When you do a QAM scan, NextPVR should find a pile of channels. They're usually digital television channels, but can also include digital radio. Are you missing channels you're getting in other applications? If so, what application, and I assume you're got it connected the same way when you tried in that app vs NextPVR? If you think you should be getting more channels, but have no other app proving this, then it could be related to the discussion we had way back at the start of this thread about set top boxes and analog.

Remember, sitting here we're just crystal ball gazing unless you give us good info.

I'm pretty sure that Comcast has eliminated all clear-QAM TV channels across their entire network. They called it the "Digital Migration" or something like that and rolled it out across the country over a year or so starting probably 2 years ago. When they did that, they gave out free (for the 1st year) Digital Terminal Adapters (DTAs) that convert the encrypted channels you subscribe to into an analog output in RF channel 3 or 4 or (if you have an upgraded DTA) an HDMI output. These DTAs are essentially stripped down set-top boxes that will only output 1 channel at a time and that must be used for tuning the selected channel. Alternatively, you can use a CableCard device such as the SiliconDust HD HomeRun Prime with a CableCard from Comcast. But that is a very different setup.

If you post the make and model of the "converter box" that you removed, we can tell if it is actually a DTA. You could also try posting your zip code to see if someone else in the area knows for sure whether Comcast has any clear-QAM channels there.

If you find you need a DTA, you'll need to follow the steps in the sticky post for enabling analog support (ie, effectively installing SoftPVR components).

http://www.twincities.com/technology/ci_...ow-cost-hd oops, BrettB is in Minn. I suspect where ever Moorty is in CA, Comcast also scrambled the basic channels...

I also have Comcast, they also scrambled all the channels here, that's why I got a cable card and hdhomerun. I now have 3 tuners (for non-copy protected) channels, and use the cable box for the copy protected ones (i.e. HBO, Showtime,...) via a Hauppauge 2250.

I'd suggest you
  • Get the AC3 audio decoder (http://www.ac3filter.net/wiki/Download_AC3Filter) - I just use the lite version.
  • Install the SoftPVR components as described here, look under Analog Tuners, also refer to the wiki link for instructions (you'll probably use option2).
Also, I believe you can get a free trial of Schedules Direct for a week or so. Highly recommend spending the $25/yr for the subscription, the data is good, integrates seamlessly with NextPVR and makes the PVR experience complete for LiveTV and recording.

Thanks for your patience. All the 31 channels picked by NPVR seem to be radio channels. Although I tried a couple of other applications -- Media Portal and Kodi -- but with neither of them I had much success. Media Portal seem to have caught a few channels, but nothing happened with them. (They might have been TV channels).

It's pretty obvious by now that all the 31 channels that are picked up by nPVR are digital radio channels (they are even number Channels 396-422 etc.

The tuner is supposed to pick up both analog and digital cable channels. But I don't quite know the function of the converter box which I removed in this trial, because I was getting no channels picked up at all with the converter box.

I will try a bit tomorrow again, but I don't see much else changing.
