Did we ever figure out what was going on at the beginning when NextPVR recorded and played back okay but Live TV gave a black screen? Not that it matters now that it's all working!

I suspect it was a matter of write permission to the buffer directory, it makes sense since recordings was working.

Requiring firewall to be OFF is a fail. NPVR installer should created the needed exceptions, and the runtime should warn about failed connections.

Whilst I have only skimmed this thread , I thought that Sub had added the necessary firewall exceptions during the install routine some time ago. (something I thought I had previously proposed as an enhancement request).

This is only for the Microsoft firewall though, not 3rd party firewalls/antivirus/anti-malware type apps.

It also only makes these firewall changes at install time. So upgrading Windows, or some Windows updates may cause it to be reset.

My point exactly, windows update tends to f**k up things and remove exceptions in the firewall. I also suspect that the "windows malicious software removal tool" has a finger in it.

A few months ago I changed my internet gateway from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.2 and windows 8.1 threw out all of the firewall exceptions with no warnings or error messages. Brought my whole office to a grinding halt because it firewalled MySQL. I had no clue that an innocuous change like that would completely reconfigure windows firewall.
