Glad to hear that your making progress. I also recommend you replace the antenna feed with good quality cable and clean you antenna connections and use contact grease on those connections to stop further corosion of those terminals.

With respect to the 550 poor sound, I encountered that problem if I manually specified channel frequencies within gbpvr. The only way I got the sound to work correctly was to get the Tuning Assistant to detect the channels and use those channel numbers within gbpvr.

Edit:
BTW, I noticed the Tuning Assistant shows different channel numbers between "cable" and "Antenna" setting, so if you have changed this setting, re-run Tuning Assistant and enter new channel numbers into gbpvr.

Well, I suspect you are probably right - it does sound a little like the audio channel is not perfectly tuned. I will give it a try with the tuning assistant.

Hi,

In trying to fix the sound problem I am seeing with my TUL (ATI) Theater 550, I tried to run the Tuning Assistant, and it immediately found some channel, but there was no image at all. The area where the image should appear stays blank like the rest of the background of the dialog box.

I also have a WinTV PVR350 in the system, and if I choose that card for the tuning assistant, all is fine. Immediately finds channels and I can actually see them.

Help?

Thanks,
GGF

I'm not sure I can offer much advice. I did have this problem with gbpvr preview mode disabled, so I simply tried all the identified channel numbers within gbpvr to match TV station to channel number. But this latest gbpvr release has got preview mode working (using encoder pass-thru) and now the image does display on Tuning Assistant.

Perhaps Sub can offer some advice.

Well, I tried to fiddle with this somewhat, to no avail.
I tried to turn on Live Preview, and tried different deinterlacing options (Encoder Passthrough and None). I also tried changing my SW MPEG-2 decoder. None helped.
While it was trying to display a channel it caught, I could see the ffdshow icon in the system tray, which was odd because I was sure I requested in config not to use ffdshow at all, ever.
Nevertheless, I used it to investigate the various filters, and all appeared just fine - PAL_B, correct number of lines, audio/video frequency difference, pins, etc. I couldn't see anything that I thought was wrong. I am not an expert, though.

Sub - can you suggest what I should check?

Thanks,
GGF

I decided to install CyberLink PowerCinema that came with my TUL Theater550, to check its results. After installation it scanned the entire set of channels, and it seems the video quality is the same as within GBPVR, but during the scanning there was no sound...

I then tried to watch TV through the program, and the results are mixed:

All channels appear to exhibit the same chirping interference type of noise during the first few seconds of watching, then it calms down.

Very strange... Can anyone suggest any ideas what to do?

Thanks,
GGF

ffdshow can be very insistant. It can insert itself in to playback graphs even without being explicitly asked to. I think you can disable this behaviour in the ffdshow settings.

Thanks, I will try.

But do you think it can give rise to chirping sounds? They sound almost like analog saturation does...

Thanks,
GGF

No, it wont be caused by ffdshow. I dont know what will be causing that. Try a different audio decoder.

Hi,

I am still having no luck with the audio stuff. It sounds similar to when you are listening to the radio and there is interference from another station.

A suggestion from csy was to try the tuning assistant, but when I try the tuning assistant, it doesn't show any channels. I am thinking of trying to fiddle around with the channel numbers next, just try and see.

Anyhow, I tried different video decoders for the Tuning Assistant - no luck.

Decided to try and remove ffdshow altogether, since I am not really using it anyway. Result: Tuning Assistant now works!

Thanks for the help people,
GGF
