You could try converting recordings to SRT subtitles if you want, to see if the look suits you any better. They'd then look like screenshots above. You may find ffmpeg does not do a good job of converting some types of closed captions though, and it makes them a lot less usable.

The font / size / color aren't currently tweakable with SRT, but mainly because no one has asked for it. I can add this if need be.

I guess the obvious question is: What's the best tool and will I be perpetually out of sync?

I don't know - you'd have to try it and see. You can also try ccextractor.

I wasn't specifically meaning ffmpeg would do a bad job. I was thinking more about the fact closed captions have a lot of different modes they use for different type of captions, like words slowly being added to the screen as the person talks, and line roll up etc, which may not map very well to SRT subtitles (which are much more basic lines of text).

If you move the mouse, does your OSD graphics sit right at the bottom of the screen, as shown in my screenshot? (or do you have a big black bar at the bottom before the OSD graphics begin? (and you should be able to see the SRT subtitles behind them)

Yes, mine looks like your sample with the subs showing in the ackground.

I'm starting to wonder if this is the splitters built in SRT, rather than NextPVR's? Can you post the npvr.log?

NextPVR's SRT text is shown under the info block, as per my screenshot in #8.

I would appreciate any thing you could do to make the subs more flexible; I really rely on them.

I didn't even realize there were subs in that image until I took a second look.
