all 3 said 'unable to communicate w recording service' and back to menu..
[i shut down rec service afterwards to flush logs]

I don't remember v4 logs well enough it is odd to see the error in npvr not nrecord

Do you have

<AllowInProcessRecording>true</AllowInProcessRecording>
<ForceRecordingServiceUse>true</ForceRecordingServiceUse>

in config.xml

nope... it did help the installer for latest v4 Big Grin
plus, where are the data dirs for v5? only the npvr dir w executables included in zip.

and to be clear, rec service isn't crashing..i think i just tried to watch too many bad ch once..
i thought it was crashing because of the 'cannot communicate w rec service' msgs

yay! latest version fixed iptv issues..
but still need to find v5 datadirs download...i try running server and it crashes looking for config.xml

is it just the data dir inside zip? i'll try that but having problems getting it to come up so i can change port

There isn't a separate data dir download. You just download the one zip file and put it in a place like C:\Program Files\NPVRv5\. Then open a command window, go to that folder and run NextPVRServer.exe. If the data dir doesn't already exist in C:\Users\Public\NPVR-data\ then it will create that directory tree. You can then stop the server and go change the config.xml.
