I build industrial HMI systems and this is always a tough point. Most of what we control is large pumps and such. In most cases the running indicator is red for danger, green for stopped, safe. Other customers like green for running because it fits the traffic light scenario. Then comes the Valves, open or closed, red or green, arghh.....

The only change that might be reasonable is to have the "red" icon changed from red to some dark gray. In that sense you will have an "off" green LED...

Yep, I think you have it on the nose here and if a change is needed it should be gray for idle, red for recording... as this might avoid some confusion between the traffic light vs tape recorder problem
I think I would prefer Sub to spend the time developing cool new features though
