This is a request of request for comments on a updated utility import existing ts files into NextPVR.

I have see repeated requests for a program to replace the existing v4 utilities and I figure I'd have a go at it.  What do you guys want to see in this?  I don't want to support anything more than mpeg ts files at first because I want the database to be compatible with the the web browser.

Other than that I am open to suggestions.

I've been using a utility from GBPVR days (2006) called "mpegimport", I think the author sixgun is long gone but it still worked in v4; not sure about v5. Essentially it has a nice simple GUI with show path, show name, recordings.xml location (default).

I guess maybe make an option "checkbox" that the imported "Recording Date" is NOT the import date but the actual recording date so when shows are ordered by Recording Date, the imported ones do not show up first.

There have been a few previous utilities https://nextpvr.com/nwiki/pmwiki.php?n=U....VidImport and powershell batch files https://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php?tid=56590

I actually don't want to know what the other programs are I want to know what feature you specifically would be looking at.

I’ve given a suggestion for your new program in the above.

No problem. Not a must have but if it could automatically look up metadata before import that'd be pretty cool.

There's nothing much other than that, that springs to mind right now. The source of the files include legacy shows that somehow got lost on a disk, some old ripped DVDs I guess (that I do actually own) and the occasional show download.

Does the ... current version of V4 ... and ... V5 ... embed the show "desc" and all that as an alternate data stream in NTFS?  What happens to that data on Linux systems?

There still will be external metadata on shares and linux if the option is enabled. People migrating shouldn't depend on this though as it is much better simply to come with a logic process to update or copy the recordings from the old system to new.

It is also silly to treat this utility as a backup when there is the recording backup file created daily. What people should start considering is using their cloud storage like OneDrive, Google Drive and Dropbox and automate the daily update to copy these files to a safe location.

Martin.

Appreciate you want to keep it straight forward by limiting to .ts files. Just and observation. Most of my imports are in .mkv or .mp4 format (American series stuff not currently available on UK TV).
I end up having to construct the import xml file manually with the filename, show sub title and description plus sometimes adding the artwork.jpg too. Bit of a pain when a series has 20+ episodes :-)
