I have a feeling that in V4 channel names were "NFLNTCH (708)"

I don't think that was something NextPVR was doing. It sounds like your xmltv file originally had that style of name in it.

This -F seems like the right option. The channel numbers just shouldn't be part of the name of the channel - that way you'll get a more consistent result, since NextPVR was really designed around having separate channel numbers and channel names.

The reason for the number name is for matching numbers instead of names. From zap2it I would get

4.1 CBOTDT
13.1 CJOHDT
24.1 CICOD24

but OTA they are different and never match

I still have the old/slow HTPC. The xmltv.xml on June 10th without -F has no parenthesis and the "number + name" is the first of three display-name tags.

See attached images from NextPVR 4.2.5 (191014) which has parethesis generated by V4 clipped in the guide but visible when clicked. Other shorter channel names do show an opening parenthesis and sometimes one digit in the guide.

With the -F option on June 13th: same three display-name tags are present but "name alone" moves from last of three to first.

With -F everything works fine in V5. I didn't try -F with V4 but it should drop the trailing (317).

I guess -F is the way to go in V4 and V5 if not using OTA?

Did you try v6?  Sub made some match changes which may or may not work better.

Good to know that sub made some tweaks in this area to v6. Unfortunately my new HTPC had problems so I RTM'd it and am back to using my old/slow HTPC with v4. Still HTPC shopping and will try v6 when I get a new one.
