Reading the resume post made me think of this.

It would be cool to have a 3rd option to add a resume or index point to a recording or all playback that has resume functionality.

Once in a while I'm in the middle of watching something, and my wife wants to watch it from the begining. It would be nice to be able to save a restore point that I can jump to, once her viewing resets/moves it.

A future idea would be to allow setting multiple points, almost like chapters, allowing to skip around to predetrmined points. This would be handy for parents who are jumping over some parts of movies/shows (eg, disney or pixar moments when parents or loved ones are killed, ect).

I do not mean to be an a$$, but why would you skip those parts in a pixar/disney/general family movie? it's probably an important part of the movie, and kids have to learn about life and death anyway. it's not like familymovie deaths are gorey and bloody.

And yes, I'm a father, although my son is just 3mo old yet. When he gets old enough to watch and understand those movies I'm not going to skip integral parts of the story just because someone dies.

This maybe a cultural difference (I live in Norway) but still.

Capone, this is not aimed at you personally in any way. Just wanted to mention that Wink

Christian...

Oh.. BTW. A bookmark function like the one described above would actually be handy. Wink I use it on my xbox all the time.

this reminds me of that "Desperate Housewives" where they try to change the ending of "little red riding hood" so the wolf was mean because he had a splinter in his paw, and they pulled it out and had a big group hug (without killing that damn wolf Smile).

but yeah i like the idea, i would love chapter points, xbmc does this pretty well.

I don't want to hide these facts of life from my son, but he's only 3yrs old. We're handling things like how to get dressed and when he needs to go potty, and I'm not ready to whip out my Death & Dying book from freshman year to add human/animal mortiality to his day quite yet.

I get your point, and I disagree w/ parents who censor things outright, rather than explain them and put them in context so they can learn. But there are points to do this at. Right now I'm letting him watch Batman/Superman/Spiderman cartoons, which have violoence. But he doesn't learn to hit, because we watch them together. Instead, in the whole last year of them, he's only learned what good guys are, and that you help people (and bad people hit, and look where they end up).

But there's a time for everything. Maybe it's different there, but here are you know, we're prudes about sex, but bring on the violence. It's just enough navigating them through that constant input. I doubt you'll put your son down for The Matrix any time soon, even though they are just hitting imaginary people. The bottom line really is if it's something you can't explain to them, you run the risk of leaving them to struggle to understand something they aren't ready for yet.

You'll get it more as son gets older, and you'll get a jolt the first time they pick up something you didn't expect they would (I can remember a cpl very clearly still). There's a time for everything, and you'll know what they can handle and when if you're a good parent that is senstive to your kids and what they are feeling.

I'm not trying to get all Dr Joyce Brothers here. Again, I argree w/ you on the whole, but just that like 3mos isn't the time, 3yrs may not quite be it either. In truth, he's seen the death scenes in Nemo and Bambi (and the one you think happens at the end of Iron Giant), and he's been ok, but I can see him troubled w/ it, and I can't get to him there w/ that. Some days, I just don't think he needs it (esp when you're putting him down in front of Finding Nemo to cheer him up, and you've got a dead wife and kids in the first 10min Wink )

We'll get a dead hamster moment here at some point, and I'll be more than glad field everythign from hamster heaven to oblivion.

Oh, and we do watch Animal Planet and BBC's Walking w/ the Dinosaurs series, so he does get the concept already that animals do eat other animals. I doubt what he can grasp, but again, you'll learn what they are ready to handle.

I'm in the no opinion camp, but you could make comskip files if you want it to autoskip some parts of the movie. You cant do this automatically, but it would work if you did it manually.

That's an idea, and would do roughly the same thing.

I guess I was thinking of would be a table like the playback_position table that would have those entries w/ a relationship to the file, and store more than one value. It could be added w/ the relationship being to the oid in the existing one.

It would just need a button assigned during playback to create the index point (maybe a msg or something that just flashes on the screen), and it would write a new row w/ the oid from playback, and the last number from the point of the press.

The default resume could still work as it does. To add this w/ as little work as possible, for now just have the keypad be the interface for using it (even just limiting it to 10 total index points). If you want to skip to the next point, you press 1 or 3 or whatever.

It could be even more basic up front where you use just 1 & 3 like a vmail system...1 is back, and 3 is forward, and you just hop through the points.

If it was useful or worthwhile, the next step woudl be to be able to open the OSD for restart/resume on demand, and have a menu/button for it there.

The net gain, aside from individual functionality, would be to be able to create DVD -like control for all the media, which would be a great feature to promote.

To be honest, I'm not even going to read this. I'm already overstocked with change requests... sorry.

Np....if there was ever a chance, it may just be cool to be able to set manual restart point.

Just have a table that records the one time point like playback does, but is set manually.

Record could be used to set while viewing, and it would just need a 2nd button for the jump to.

If there is a way this could be done as a plugin, maybe someone would develop if they saw merit in it.
